Saints Fall to Western New England in Overtime

Western New England quarterback Anthony Service ran for two fourth-quarter touchdowns for force overtime, then threw a touchdown pass in the overtime period to lead the Golden Bears to a 27-24 win over St. Lawrence in a non-league football game in Springfield, Massachusetts, on Saturday.

Sean Richardson threw three touchdown passes to help the Saints build a 21-7 lead. After a scoreless first quarter, he found Cameron Edwards for a four-yard score to give the Saints a 7-0 lead. Western New England tied the score on a one-yard touchdown run by Peter Hoff with less than five minutes to play in the half, but the Saints responded with a five-play, 77-yard touchdown drive capped by a 19-yard leaping catch in the back of the end zone by Vincenzo Ferraro to give the Saints a 14-7 lead at the half.

Ferraro caught another touchdown pass late in the third, diving on a low pass in the end zone from Richardson from nine yards out.

Western New England won the coin flip prior to overtime and opted to defend the first possession. The Saints picked up 12 yards on their overtime drive, but were forced to settle for a 30-yard field goal by Daly Hebert.

The Saints forced the Golden Bears into a fourth-and-one situation in overtime, but Service got a first down with a five-yard run to keep the drive alive.

Richardson was 18-for-30 for 274 passing yards for the Saints, while Rodrick Payne led the Saints on the ground, gaining 98 yards on 31 carries. Travis Marnell made five catches for a career-high 120 yards. John Maye (5-72), Ferraro (4-50) and Edwards (4-32) also had receptions for the Saints.

Service led Western New England on the ground and through the air, picking up 111 rushing yards on 18 carries and going 14-for-28 passing for 193 yards.

Ryan Byrne led the Saints' defense with a career-high 17 tackles and 2.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Skyler Williamson added 11 tackles for the Saints. Mike Chirco had 17 tackles for the Golden Bears, who improved to 3-2 on the season.

St. Lawrence, now 1-3, will return to Liberty League play against Union in Schenectady, New York, next Saturday.
