Saints Fall Short in Loss to Ithaca

St. Lawrence rallied for a combined seven runs in the final two innings of Wednesday's midweek non-conference matchup with Ithaca, but fell just short in an 11-10 loss to the Bombers on Tom Fay Field.

Taylor Digilio led all batters with four hits, including a double, in a 4-for-5 day at the plate with two runs scored. Michael LeFevre and Devin Robson both finished with two extra-base hits for St. Lawrence, as LeFevre went yard in the ninth inning to pull the Saints within two runs at the time, 11-9. The first of Robson's two doubles also helped the Saints erase an early deficit, cutting the Bombers' lead to 3-2 in the sixth.

Ithaca took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run home run to left by Trevor Thompson off Saints' starter Evan Reichel. Reichel pitched two innings and gave up two runs on three hits. The Bombers then extended to 3-0 in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by Matt Carey.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Saints put together a three-run rally to tie the game with the help of Robson's double that plated Adam Reichel and Digilio and an RBI groundout by Erik Larsen that brought LeFevre in to score.

But Ithaca scored three runs in the top of the seventh to retake the lead; two on passed balls and one on a wild pitch, and then added two more in the top of the eighth for an 8-3 advantage.

The Saints chipped away with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the frame. Brendon Frank hit a lead-off single to left field and LeFevre followed with his own single to left to put two men on with no outs.

Robson's second double drove in Frank for an 8-4 Ithaca lead and before Larsen recorded another RBI groundout to plate LeFevre. A fielder's choice by Mic Regan allowed Robson to score, as Ithaca tried to make a play at the plate but the catcher couldn't handle the throw after a collision with Robson.

Trailing 8-6 heading into the top of the ninth, the Saints allowed three runs on three hits and three walks to give the Bombers an 11-6 advantage. Reliever Charlie Pacilio came into the game with the bases loaded and one out and allowed a run on one hit but got a fly out and a pop out to work out of another bases-loaded jam and end the inning.

In the ninth, the Saints pulled with one with four runs on four hits that started with a double down the right field line by Digilio. Reichel singled to right in the next at bat and Frank reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Digilio to score for St. Lawrence. With a runner on, LeFevre hit his second home run of the season to cut deficit to 11-9. After Robson worked a walk and moved into scoring position with the help of a passed ball and a fly out by Larsen, Regan hit an RBI single up the middle to bring the Saints within one at 11-10. However, the Saints left the tying run on base as Jeremy Gerringer struck out looking to end the game.

Reliever Tom Consentino picked up his first win of the season for Ithaca, despite allowing six runs on seven hits. He also struck out one in three innings of work. Logan Barer was credited with the save.

Senior Matt Phelan took the loss for St. Lawrence, as he was credited with three runs on two hits in an inning of work in the seventh when Ithaca regained the lead.

The Saints, now 10-19 overall, will close out the regular season with a four-game Liberty League series against Vassar on Tom Fay Field this weekend. Game one against the Brewers on Saturday is scheduled for 12 p.m.
