The St. Lawrence baseball team finished the 2017 season with a 7-5 in the final game of a Liberty League series with Vassar on a cold, rainy Sunday afternoon on Tom Fay Field in Canton.
The Saints and Brewers played two full seven-innings games, as well as a little more than 2.5 innings in the continuation of Saturday's halted game to start the day. The Brewers ended up winning the halted game 7-0 after leading 5-0 when play was called Saturday afternoon. They also won the first full game on Sunday afternoon 1-0. The first loss eliminated St. Lawrence from playoff contention.
Evan Reichel earned the win in a relief appearance for the Saints and
Liam Rogers closed it out with his second save of the season.
Sam Downes was the pitcher of record for St. Lawrence in the 1-0 loss, as he gave up a sixth-inning home run but was otherwise stellar in his final appearance for the Scarlet and Brown.
Game 1 (7-0 Vassar) –
Vassar carried a 5-0 lead into the second day of play after a three-run fourth inning and a solo home run from Dennis Shanager and RBI single by Bobby Kinne in the fifth before play was halted.
Play resumed on Sunday in the top of the fifth with two on for the Brewers and one out with
Matt Phelan on the mound for St. Lawrence. Phelan pitched to one batter before being relieved by
Will Fellows.
Vassar extended the lead to 7-0 with Fellows on the mound, but all seven runs were credited to the original starter
Emmett Dunn. Fellows gave up just one hit and walked two in two and two thirds innings, with a pair of strikeouts.
St. Lawrence finished with three hits in the loss after being no-hit through four innings on Saturday.
Devin Robson led off the bottom of the fifth with a single to center for the Saints first hit of the game.
Anthony Butler and Evan O'Keefe also singled for the Saints.
Game 2 (1-0 Vassar) –
Matt Martino's solo home run down the left field line in the bottom of the sixth inning was the lone run in the Brewers' second win of the afternoon.
St. Lawrence threatened in the top of the seventh inning after singles from
Brendon Frank and
Mic Regan and a walk to pinch-hitter
Evan Reichel loaded the bases with two outs, but
Taylor Digilio struck out swinging to end the game.
Frank and Regan both had multi-hit games in the loss.
For the Saints, Downes recorded his third complete game of the season and allowed just one run on five hits with strikeouts. Joe Conti pitched five scoreless innings for Vassar, but it was Max Spencer who was the pitcher of record for the Brewers. He allowed just two hits in an inning and a third. Bryan Rubin earned the save.
Game 3 (7-5 St. Lawrence) –
The Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with the help of back-to-back RBI singles from
Anthony Butler and
Mic Regan and held on for the remainder of the game, adding to more in the third and three in the fifth en route to the 7-5 win.

Michael LeFevre,
Devin Robson, Butler and Regan each finished with two hits, while
Beau Yaremko also added a single. Â Butler had a game-high four RBI, while LeFevre scored three of the Saints' runs.
Evan Reichel picked up the win for the Saints after coming on in relief of starter
Caleb Clarke with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the second inning after the Brewers had cut the Saints lead in half, 2-1. Reichel got the Brewers to foul out and fly out to end the threat.
In the top of the third, LeFevre led off with a single to left field and Robson followed with an RBI triple to the base of the wall in left to put the Saints in front 3-1 before Butler followed with a sacrifice fly to deep center to push the lead to 4-1.
Vassar chipped away with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Saints responded with three in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
With two one and no one out, Butler hit a two-run single to right center to plate both LeFevre and Robson. Regan followed with another single and
Erik Larsen recorded an RBI groundout to drive in the Saints seventh and final run of the day.
After cutting the St. Lawrence lead to 7-4 with two runs in the bottom half of the frame Vassar then added a run in the bottom of the sixth for the 7-5 margin. The Brewers had the go-ahead run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh with two on and two out, but Rogers struck out Daniel Bonfiglio to end the game.
Reichel earned his team-high fourth win of the season in 3.2 innings of work, allowing three runs on eight hits with one strikeout. Rogers struck out two in two innings and gave up one hit and one run.
The Saints finish 2017 with an 11-21 overall record and 9-12 mark in Liberty League play. Vassar improved to 19-17 and 11-9 and advance to the Liberty League tournament.
