The St. Lawrence baseball team was swept by St. John Fisher in a nonconference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon as the Cardinals once again posted a late-game comeback to win the opening game 7-4 and took the second 11-3.
The Saints led 4-0 through three innings in game one before St. John Fisher combined for seven runs in the final three frames en route to the win. The Cardinals opened game two with four runs in the first and five in the second to build an insurmountable 9-0 lead. The Saints scored single runs in the third, fourth and seventh innings of the nightcap.
Michael LeFevre and
Anthony Butler both went 2-for-3 in game one, while
Adam Reichel was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Devin Robson recorded a multi-hit game (2-for-4) in the second game and
Isaac Lewis has two RBI.
With the losses, the Saints are now 4-10 overall this season. St. John Fisher improves to 15-6 with the sweep.
Game 1 –
In the Saints' first at-bat,
Isaac Lewis singled and LeFevre reached on an error to put two runners on with one out with
Adam Reichel at the plate. Reichel tripled to right center to clear the bases and give the Saints a 2-0 lead. In the next at-bat, Robson hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring Reichel in to score and extend the lead to 3-0.
The Saints added another run in the top of the third on an RBI double by
Jeremy Gerringer for a 4-0 advantage.
But St. John Fisher responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 4-1 and scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead, 5-4. The Cardinals extended the lead with two runs on one hit in the bottom of the sixth for the eventual 7-4 margin.
St. Lawrence starter
Evan Reichel threw four and two-thirds innings and allowed five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
Caleb Clarke pitched an inning and a third in relief and gave up two runs on one hit.
For St. John Fisher, starter Jim Dawson earned the win. He allowed four runs on nine hits with a pair of strikeouts in five innings. Relievers Jason Wasilnak and Kyle Chambers each pitched an inning with Chambers earning the save.
Game 2 –
St. John Fisher built a 9-0 lead through two innings with the help of seven hits and five errors.
Alex Black, who started the game for St. Lawrence allowed nine runs (two earned) on seven hits in an inning and a third before he was relieved by
Will Fellows. Fellows led the Saints' staff with three strikeouts on the afternoon. He and
Charlie Pacilio each allowed a run.
St. Lawrence scored their first run in the top of the third on an RBI single to left by
Isaac Lewis that plated
Beau Yaremko and added another run in the fourth when
Anthony Butler scored when Yaremko reached on a fielding error by the Cardinals' infield.
In the seventh,
Joe DeGuardia led off the inning with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a wild pitch before a fly out to center for
Brendon Frank moved DeGuardia into scoring position at third base.
In the next at bat, Lewis picked up another RBI on a groundout to second that brought DeGuardia in for the Saints third and final run.
St. Lawrence is scheduled to host Plattsburgh for a single nonconference game on Wednesday, April 12 at 4 p.m.
