Michael LeFevre led the St. Lawrence baseball team with two doubles on Wednesday afternoon against Plattsburgh State, but the Saints fell to the Cardinals 8-4 in their home opener on Tom Fay Field.
Both of LeFevre's doubles hit the base of the wall in left field as he finished 2-for-4 with a walk in the game, while
Brendon Frank and
Jeremy Gerringer also recorded hits for the Saints.
Plattsburgh built a 4-0 lead before the Saints halved the deficit in the bottom of the third inning.
Frank and
Adam Reichel led off the inning with back-to-back walks. After a pair of fly outs
Anthony Butler reached on an error by the shortstop that allowed Frank to score and Reichel to move to third for a 4-1 game. In the next at bat, Reichel came around to score on a wild pitch to cut the Cardinals lead to 4-2.
The Plattsburgh pitching staff retired the Saints in order in two of the next four innings and increased their lead to 8-2 through the seventh.
St. Lawrence put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the eighth to add two more runs, but couldn't close the gap.
With the bases loaded,
Joe DeGuardia reached on an error by the second baseman that plated
Erik Larsen and Frank followed with a single to short to score
Evan O'Keeffe.
The Saints finished with four hits and left 11 runners on base, while Plattsburgh record 15 hits and also stranded 11.
Starter
Alex Black pitched two and one-third innings for St. Lawrence, allowing four runs on six hits in the loss, with three walks and a strikeout. Frank Finkbeiner threw two and two-thirds for Plattsburgh and allowed two runs on one hit with four walks.
With the loss, the Saints fall to 4-11 on the year while Plattsburgh improves to 5-12.
St. Lawrence will host Skidmore for a four-game Liberty League series on Friday and Saturday afternoon.
