Saints Drop a Pair to Middlebury

The St. Lawrence University softball team lost both games of a non-league doubleheader with Middlebury College, 3-0 and 7-6, on Wednesday afternoon in Middlebury, Vt.

Allison Quigley silenced the Saints' bats in the first game, pitching a complete game, four-hit shutout with three strikeouts and no walks. Erin Giles gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead with a solo home run to lead off the second. Siobhan O'Sullivan added an RBI single later in the inning, and Sarah Freyre capped the scoring with an RBI single in the fifth. O'Sullivan was 3-for-3 at the plate, while Freyre was 2-for-3.

Deanna Sullivan, Elle Gray, Emma Reakes and Mylea Mann hit singles for the Saints.

Allie Courtwright took the loss, allowing one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks in three innings. Hannah Sears came on in relief, allowing one earned run on five hits over three innings.

Olivia Bravo hit a walk-off single with one out in the bottom of the seventh in the second game, scoring Hye-Jin Kim from third with a hit to left field.

The Saints, who trailed 4-1 after Middlebury scored four runs in the fifth inning, responded immediately with four runs of their own to take a 5-4 lead. Middlebury once again took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning, but Mann scored on an error in the top of the seventh to force the Panthers back to the plate in the bottom of the inning.

Sullivan went 3-for-5 with two RBI to lead the Saints' offense, while Mann was 2-for-4. Madison Mitchell allowed four runs in 4.1 innings, striking out five and walking two. Caroline Young and Courtwright both pitched one inning in relief, with Courtwright taking the loss on the walk-off hit.

Both Bravo and Melanie Mandell were 3-for-4 for the Panthers, with Mandell adding two RBI. Marybeth Stone was 2-for-4 with three RBI and O'Sullivan was also 2-for-4. Taylor Gardner allowed 11 hits, three walks and four earned runs in the complete game victory.

The Saints, now 12-6 on the season, will host Houghton in a non-league doubleheader in their home opener on Friday, then face RIT in a pair of Liberty League games on Saturday.
