Anthony Butler scored the game-tying run and drove in the game-winning run as the St. Lawrence baseball team rallied for a 6-5 win against St. Joseph's College (L.I.) in the first game of a Sunday doubleheader at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. St. Joseph's put together a rally of its own in the second game to post a 10-9 win and a series split.
After two days in Florida, the Saints are now 1-2 on the year after a season-opening loss to Colby College. St. Joseph's improved to 3-2 with the split.
Game One –
The Saints came from behind twice against the eagles, erasing a 3-0 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the third inning and plating two more in the bottom of the fifth after the Eagles had taken a 5-3 lead.
Butler and first-year
Brendon Frank led the Saints at the plate, as Butler finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while Frank was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Senior closer
Liam Rogers was the pitcher of record with a strikeout in two-thirds of inning worth of work. Starter
Emmett Dunn went five and two-thirds, allowed seven hits and five runs with three strikeouts.
With St. Joseph's up 3-0,
Taylor Digilio led off the third inning for St. Lawrence with a single and
Adam Reichel followed with a one-out single to left to put two runners on. After a failed pickoff attempt allowed Digilio to advance to third, he came around to score the Saints first run on a wild pitch.
Reichel scored on an RBI single to left from Frank and Butler drove in
Mic Regan with an RBI double to center to tie the game at 3-3.
The Eagles scored two runs in the top of the fourth to retake the lead, 5-3, but the Saints responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to once again tie the game. Frank scored on a passed ball to cut the deficit to 5-4 and an RBI sacrifice fly from
Tyler Guido plated Butler for a 5-5 game.
In the bottom of the seventh, Frank led off the inning with a double to left. In an attempt to move the runner with a ground ball to the right side, Butler reached on an error by the Eagles' second baseman allowing Frank to score and win the game for St. Lawrence.
Game Two –
A five-run seventh inning helped St. Joseph's to a 10-9 come-from-behind win, erasing a 9-5 lead for the Saints through five and a half innings.
Frank, Regan and
Jeremy Gerringer each had three this in the game for St. Lawrence, with Frank leading the team with five RBI, while Regan scored a team-best three runs.
First-year
Caleb Clarke made his first collegiate start and had the lead when he was relieved by classmate
Louis LaCivita in the fifth inning. Clarke allowed four runs on five hits with three strikeouts through four innings, while LaCivita gave up one run on five hits and a strikeout of his own in two innings of relief.
Liam Rogers was also the pitcher of record in game two, taking the loss after coming in to close out the game in the seventh inning. He faced seven batters and allowed five runs on five hits with a pair of walks.
The Saints took a 5-0 lead in the top of first inning behind an RBI single by senior
Devin Robson, a two-RBI double from Frank and two-RBI single to right by Gerringer.
Frank helped extend the lead to 6-0 in the second inning with an RBI single to center that drove in Robson and moved
Mic Regan to second. Back-to-back walks to Butler and senior
Erik Larsen pushed the lead to 7-0.
Three doubles for St. Joseph's in the bottom of the third cut Saints lead to 7-4, but St. Lawrence responded with a single run in both the fourth and fifth for a 9-4 advantage.
The Eagles chipped away with a run in the bottom of the sixth and then won the game with a five-run seventh.
The Saints have two games remaining in Florida before traveling to RPI for a four-game Liberty League series next weekend. They will face Western Connecticut State on Monday morning at 9 a.m.
