First year goaltender
Alex Terry made a huge save with seven seconds remaining in the game to help the sixth-ranked St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team hold on to an 11-10 victory over No. 12 Middlebury in the Saints' home opener on Monday night at North Country Field.
Â
A.J. Kucinski fired a shot from just outside the crease from the left side, but Terry was positioned perfectly, as he popped the shot up into the air, caught it as it fell and fired the ball down the field as time expired for his sixth save of the game and third collegiate victory.
Â
The Saints' offense was led by
Jordan Dow, who scored with four goals.
Conor Healey added two more, while
Andrew Jarrett also scored two goals and picked up two ground balls.
Jamie DeNicola,
Steven Peterson and
Jon Fairbanks each added one goal for the Saints.
Â
It was a back-and-forth game from the start, with Middlebury building a 3-1 lead early before the Saints responded with three straight goals for a 4-3 advantage early in the second quarter. The teams traded goals for the remainder of the quarter, with the Saints holding a 6-5 halftime advantage.
Â
Jake Schneider ripped a shot to tie the game, 6-6, at the 10:41 mark of the third quarter, but the Saints responded with a three -goal run, capped by an unassisted over-the-shoulder goal from Dow, to take a 9-6 lead. Middlebury fired back with two goals 15 seconds apart to cut the lead to one, and Jack Gould made it a 4-0 Middlebury run to give the Panthers a 10-9 lead with just under eight minutes to play in the fourth quarter. Jarrett tied the game with just over six minutes to play and set up Dow for the game-winner with a pass from the top left corner with just 3:45 remaining.
Â
Middlebury was led by Schneider and Kucinski with two goals each. Will Ernst and Will Perry combined to make 13 saves in goal for Middlebury.
Â
St. Lawrence improved to 3-0 on the season, while Middlebury fell to 2-2.
Â
The Saints will travel to Tampa, Fla., to take on Babson and Colorado College next week during their spring break trip.Â
