Kyle Hayton finished with 28 saves for St. Lawrence with 10 each in both the first and third periods. He made two saves exactly a minute apart in the first that kept the game scoreless in the early goings. First, he fell on a rebound in the crease as the Knights jammed away and then, with the Saints on the penalty kill, snagged a quick shot from the right circle with the glove.
After 19 minutes of scoreless hockey, the Saints took the lead just after a power play opportunity expired with Sullivan's ninth of the season and first since Dec. 2 at home against Harvard.
Gavin Bayreuther kept the puck in the offensive zone at the left point before sending it to
Jacob Pritchard in the right circle. Pritchard sent a cross-ice pass to Sullivan on the back post for a one-time redirect behind Clarkson netminder Jake Kielly and a 1-0 lead for St. Lawrence.
Clarkson's A.J. Fossen tied the game off an odd-man rush at 5:10 of the second period to send the rivals into the final frame knotted at 1-1.
Early in the third period, senior
Woody Hudson had a scoring bid for the Saints when he chipped the puck to himself in the neutral zone and put a shot into Kielly's right pad with
Ryan Lough crashing down the left wing, but he couldn't get a handle on the rebound. Clarkson countered with a rush of its own and a shot from Sam Vigneault was saved by Hayton but trickled through the crease and hit the far post. Bayreuther was there to clear the threat back to neutral ice.
Just minutes later, Nico Sturm gave Clarkson a 2-1 lead with a breakaway goal at the 5:10 mark and he also potted the empty-net tally with five seconds to play for the 3-1 margin for the Golden Knights.
After Clarkson took a 2-1 lead and with the Saints on the penalty kill, Hayton made a pair of point-blank saves with the left pad to keep his team within reach but St. Lawrence couldn't find a rhythm late in the game with the extra attacker and Sturm capitalized for the empty netter.
The game featured 14 combined penalties, though both teams failed to convert on man-advantage opportunities. The Saints were 0-for-5, while Clarkson finished 0-for-7.
With the loss, the Saints are now 15-8-6 and 11-3-3 in ECAC Hockey. Clarkson improves to .500, 12-12-4 overall and 7-7-2 in conference games. Kielly made 21 saves for Clarkson in the win.
The Saints are also once again tied with Union atop the ECAC Hockey standings.
St. Lawrence will travel to Princeton next Friday, Feb. 10.
