Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Saints Fall to No. 3 Clarkson in First of Two on the Weekend

A pair of power play goals from Clarkson's leading scorer Sheldon Rempal helped the third-ranked Golden Knights to a 3-1 win over the St. Lawrence men's hockey team on Friday night at Cheel Arena in Potsdam, N.Y.

Jacob Pritchard tallied the lone goal for the Saints, as he has done in each of the team's last four games, marking the longest goal-scoring streak of his career.

Sophomore goaltender Daniel Mannella was outstanding in just his second career start for St. Lawrence with 26 saves, allowing just the power play goals as Clarkson's third was a empty-net tally.

With the loss, the Saints drop to 1-13-1 and 0-6-1 in ECAC Hockey games, while Clarkson's unbeaten streak stretches to 10 games as the Golden Knights improve to 14-3-1 and 7-0-0 in conference games.

Despite the stark contrast in season records, Friday's game was exciting and evenly matched.

The Saints outshot Clarkson through the first 20 minutes 13-9 and had a number of quality changes go just wide, including a breakaway attempt by Philip Alftberg with just under six minutes to play in the frame. Alftberg's shot sailed just over the shoulder of Clarkson netminder Jake Kielly, but sailed just over the crossbar.

After a scoreless first period, Pritchard and the Saints struck first after an end-to-end rush by Ben Finkelstein on the power play. Finkelstein carried down the right-wing side and took a shot from the bottom of the circle that was initially stopped by Kielly. Mike Marnell, who returned to the Saints lineup for the first time since October 28 in Wisconsin, had a shot at it but it was Pritchard who was there to bury the rebound for his seventh of year at the 5:16 mark of the second period.

However, the St. Lawrence lead would last a minute and half after Clarkson earned its first power play opportunity of the game with Callum Cusinato in the box. Clarkson won the ensuing draw and needed just seven seconds to get Rempal the puck in the left circle for a one-time goal and a tie game at the 6:45 mark.

In the latter half of the frame, with Clarkson back on the power play after another Cusinato penalty, Rempal beat Mannella again on a near identical play to give Clarkson the lead for good.

Nico Sturm added an empty net goal with 36 seconds to play to push to the eventual 3-1 margin.

Clarkson finished 2-for-4 on the power play while the Saints went 1-for-3 on Friday night.

The Golden Knights also finished with a slight 29-27 edge in shots on goal, with Kielly matching Mannell's 26 saves.

The teams will faceoff at Appleton Arena in Canton on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
