Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Saints Fall to Michigan, 3-1, in Season Opener

Two early power play goals helped the University of Michigan to a 3-1 win over the St. Lawrence men's hockey team in the Wolverines' first game in Appleton Arena since November 1959.

The Saints got a goal from sophomore Alex Gilmour in the second period, with Taggart Corriveau and first-year Philip Alftberg both recording their first career assists on the play.

Michigan's Tony Calderone opened the scoring at the 12:44 mark of the first period with a quick redirect in front after a tic-tac-toe play from the circles by Joseph Cecconi and Cooper Marody, who picked up the assists.

At the 4:16 mark of the second, Michigan extended the lead to 2-0 on another power play tally by Quinn Hughes with a rip from just inside the blue line.

Just over a minute and a half later, the Saints cut the deficit to one on an odd-man rush. Corriveau took an outlet pass out from Alftberg and moved through the neutral zone and into Michigan territory before hitting Gilmour with a backhand pass for the goal.

The Saints had an opportunity to tie the game with less 1:18 to play in the middle frame, but Michael Ederer was robbed on the backhand by Wolverines' netminder Jack LaFontaine at the edge of the crease.

Midway through the third, Alex Roos pushed Michigan to the final 3-1 margin with a backhand shot from the bottom of the left circle that beat Arthur Brey five hole.

Brey finished with 24 saves for St. Lawrence in the loss, including one on a breakaway and a huge glove save late in the third period to keep the game within reach. LaFontaine made 23 saves in the win for the Wolverines; the first for new head coach Mel Pearson.

St. Lawrence, now 0-1 on the season, will face another Big Ten opponent in Penn State on Saturday in Appleton Arena at 7 p.m.
