Saints Edge Skidmore to Advance to Liberty League Semifinals

Junior captain Brendan McNamee struck once for the Saints and that was all it took as the No. 3 St. Lawrence University men's soccer team edged No. 6 Skidmore 1-0 in a Liberty League first-round game, Tuesday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field. With the win, the Scarlet and Brown went 2-0 on the season against Skidmore, with both contests ending in a 1-0 result.

Rob Brandell tipped McNamee a pass outside the 18-yard box, then McNamee fired a shot which skipped off of the hands of Skidmore goalkeeper Sebastian Bosch into the back of the net.

In a back-and-forth battle, the Saints also created multiple opportunities down the stretch. Tapshak Augustine sent a shot just wide after causing a turnover out in front of the Thoroughbreds goal.

"It was an excellent victory for the team today the team," said head coach Mike Toshack. "The team dug deep physically and put together a gutsy performance after coming off only two days rest having played 65 minutes and a man down in two overtimes on Saturday. The character of the team and senior leadership on the field were great today and we look forward to getting ready to go play Vassar on Saturday."

The Thoroughbreds topped the Saints in shots 21-12 and held a 10-3 shots on goal advantage. Brennan Mitrolka led Skidmore with three shots on goal.

Saints' goalkeeper Mike Smith matched his season-high with 10 saves between the pipes, while Bosch made two saves for Skidmore.

St. Lawrence improved to 8-6-3 on the season and advanced to the semifinal round of the Liberty League tournament, while Skidmore ended their season 6-4-6 overall.

The Saints will face No. 2 Vassar in the semifinals for the first time since 2013 at Hobart in Geneva, New York, Saturday Nov. 4th at 1:30 p.m.
