Elizabeth Giguere scored two goals, including one just before time expired in the first period, to lead the second-ranked Clarkson women's hockey team to a 4-2 win over sixth-ranked St. Lawrence in a non-league contest on Friday afternoon at Appleton Arena.
"It's always a tough battle when we play Clarkson," said St. Lawrence head coach
Chris Wells '92. "We had a tough time executing in certain situations and Clarkson took away many plays with their sticks. It's always fun to play these games this time of year."
Giguere gave Clarkson a 1-0 lead with a power play goal, beating St. Lawrence goaltender
Sonjia Shelly with a wrist shot through a screen to the far post from the top of the left faceoff circle.
Kennedy Marchment tied the score for the Saints just after the halfway point of the first.
Hannah Miller took a shot from the right faceoff dot, and while Clarkson goaltender Shea Tiley made the initial save, Marchment was at the far post and was able to sweep the puck into the net for her third goal of the season.
Giguere's second goal gave the Golden Knights a 2-1 lead. She tooke a feed from Loren Gable and skated free on a breakaway, sliding the puck between Shelly's legs just moments before the period ended. The referees reviewed the play and ruled the puck did in fact cross the line before time expired in the period.
Cassidy Vinkle increased Clarkson's lead to two goals halfway through the second period, firing a wrist shot from the right circle into the short side for her first goal of the season.
Nadine Edney cut the lead to one early in the third period, scoring her first of the season on a rebound after Miller picked up a loose puck in the Saints' zone and got a shot off Tiley's leg pads.
But Clarkson once again increased the lead to two, as Rhyen McGill found Amanda Titus open between the circles, and Titus snapped a wrist shot past Shelly for her first goal of the season.
Shelly finished the game with 20 saves, while Tiley stopped 15 shots for Clarkson.
St. Lawrence fell to 2-1-2 on the season, while Clarkson improved to 6-0-1. The two teams will face off again tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. at Cheel Arena.
