Senior Chloe Knapp scored a pair of goals in the first half for the St. Lawrence University Women's Lacrosse team but an early 3-1 deficit to Union College proved to be too much to overcome as Union posted a 7-4 win over the Saints in a Liberty League matchup Friday afternoon on Frank Bailey Field in Schenectady.
The loss snapped a three-game win streak for the Saints (6-5 overall, 2-1 Liberty League).
Union (6-2, 3-0) opened the game with three goals in the first seven minutes including the game's opening goal 1:13 into the contest.
Knapp scored to knot the score at 1-1 but Union answered with three straight goals to take a 4-1 lead nine minutes into the game.
Knapp struck again to cut the lead in half at 4-2 and Kayla Schmalz made it a one-goal game coming from behind the goal and scoring her 10th of the season.
Union added a goal at the very end of the first half to take a 5-3 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Union scored in transition to increase its lead to 6-3 with 21:58 left and went ahead 7-3 on a play as a result of a free position play 10 minutes later.
In the closing minutes, Abigail Owens scored on a free position attempt to close the gap to 7-4 but the Saints were unable to draw any closer.
The Saints forced 25 Union turnovers and had five free positions to Union's one.
Knapp led the Saints with her two goals while Owens and Schmalz each scored once. Kiera Taussig led St. Lawrence with three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
The Saints continue Liberty League play at 3 pm Saturday against William Smith in Geneva.
