Big Bats Power Saints Past Roos in Sweep

A twelve-run fifth inning coupled with shutout pitching and a home run from first-year Allie Courtwright helped the St. Lawrence softball team to a 14-0 game one win over SUNY Canton in a nonconference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The Saints followed up that performance with an 8-5 win for the sweep.

Courtwright was 2-for-3 at the plate in game one with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored as one of six Saints to record a multi-hit game and one of five to have more than one RBI in the contest. She also allowed just three hits and recorded six strikeouts to earn her fourth win of the season.

The Southborough, Mass. native's two-run home run in the second inning of game one put the Saints in front for good, but it was the 12 runs on 12 hits in the fifth the forced an early end to the game in five innings.

With one out, Kylee Knight singled up the middle and would score on an RBI double to right center by Elle Gray. After Gray advanced to third on a passed ball, Mylea Mann brought her in to score with a single to left center to push the Saints lead to 4-0.

The Saints would load the bases after Emma Reakes singled through the left side and Abrianna Schlickenmayer was hit by a pitch, setting up an RBI single from Kelsey Murphy and a two RBI single to second by Carly Dziekan for a 7-0 advantage for St. Lawrence.

Courtwright followed with an RBI single to left and pinch-hitter Jacqueline Dufour hit an RBI single of her own to shortstop for the Saints eighth and ninth runs, respectively. Knight followed that up with her second hit of the inning, a double down the left field line, two drive in two move and push the lead to double digits at 11-0.

The Saints sent 10 batters to the plate before recording the second out in the inning, but tacked on three more runs before the Roos were able to get out of the inning.

Mylea Mann recorded her second RBI single of the inning and Emma Reakes hit a two-run home run to left field – her team-leading third of the year – for the eventual 14-0 margin.

The second game on Wednesday was a hit parade with the Saints tallying 14 hits and the Roos notching 13 of their own. Kylee Knight and Abrianna Schlickenmayer led the Saints with three hits apiece, while Emma Reakes drove in half of the Saints' eight runs with four RBI.

Knight led off the game with a double to center for the Saints and came around to score on a Roos throwing error that allowed Gray to reach safely in the next at bat. Later in the inning with two out, Schlickenmayer singled to center to plate Gray and make it 2-0 after one.

In the second inning, it was Knight who drove in the third run for St. Lawrence with another hit to center and Reakes tallied her own outfield single later in the inning with the bases loaded and two out for three RBI and a 6-0 Saints lead.

The Roos scored two runs in both the bottom of the third and fourth innings to chip away and pull within two runs at 6-4.

Starter Emma Gailey earned the win and pitched three and a third before she was relieved by Hannah Sears, who was credited with the save. Gailey allowed four runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts. Sears came in with one out and one on in the bottom of the fourth and closed out the game for the Saints. In three and two-thirds she allowed just one run on five hits, while striking out a season-high seven batters to help St. Lawrence clinch the sweep.

The Saints added two more runs on four hits in the top of the sixth and SUNY Canton answered with one of its own in the bottom of the frame, but couldn't fully erase the early 6-0 deficit in the loss.
With the sweep the Saints improve to 14-17 overall on the year as they prepare for their final Liberty League doubleheaders at RIT and Rochester this weekend.
