Women’s Lacrosse Completes Weekend Sweep with Win over RIT

Chloe Knapp scored three goals while Caroline Bailey, Kara Hurley and Alexandra LaMotte each scored twice the St. Lawrence University Women's Lacrosse team completed a weekend Liberty League sweep with a 12-10 victory over RIT Saturday afternoon on North Country Field at Hall-Leet Stadium in Canton.

The Saints (6-4 overall, 2-0 Liberty League) started the weekend with a thrilling 11-10 overtime win over Rochester Friday but had at least a two-goal lead for almost all of the second half against RIT (3-6, 0-2). The win was also the third in a row and fourth in the least five games for St. Lawrence.

Knapp scored two of the first three goals of the game after Bailey opened the scoring just 51 seconds into the contest as St. Lawrence jumped out to an early 3-0 lead.

RIT scored its first goal at the 22:21 mark of the opening half but the Saints responded with three of the next four goals to take a 6-2 lead. LaMotte scored two goals in the run and Abigail Owens scored with eight minutes left to give the Saints the four-goal lead.

RIT trimmed the lead to 6-3 with a free-position goal late in the half before the intermission.

In the second half, RIT opened with two quick goals in the first 1:45 of the period to close to within a goal at 6-5. The Saints came back to score three consecutive goals to regain control.

Kayla Schmalz, Hurley and Greta Massey each scored for the Saints to take a 9-5 lead.

RIT scored the next two goals in a span of 30 seconds to close to within two goals at 9-7 before Hurley notched her second goal of the game as the Saints regained the three-goal advantage.

With just less than six minutes remaining, the Tigers scored again to get to within a pair of goals at 10-8 but Knapp and Bailey scored consecutive goals to push the Saints lead to 12-8.

RIT scored two late goals in a short 14-secod span for the final margin of victory.

Knapp and Bailey led the Saints with three points each while Hurley and LaMotte added two points each for a balanced attack. Tori Smith led the defense with four caused turnovers and two ground balls while Olga Lukas improved her record to 5-1 making eight saves for the Saints.

The Saints continue Liberty League play next weekend with road games at Union Friday and at William Smith Saturday.
