Leading by a narrow 3-2 margin late in the game, the St. Lawrence baseball team tagged Plattsburgh State for nine runs in the top of the seventh inning on Tuesday en route to a 12-2 win on the road.
Michael LeFevre led the Saints at the plate with a perfect 5-for-5 afternoon including a double, with three RBI and a run scored. First-year
Anthony Butler had a team-high four runs batted in and
Mic Regan,
Taylor Digilio,
Isaac Lewis and
Devin Robson each scored a pair of runs in the win.
Senior starting pitcher
Frank Grady allowed just four hits in seven innings to pick up his first win of the season. The Burlington, Vt. native recorded one strikeout and only issued one walk; retiring Plattsburgh in order in four of his seven innings pitched. Â
Relievers
Liam Rogers and
Matt Phelan also kept the Cardinals off the bases; sitting the home team down 1-2-3 in both the eighth and ninth, respectively, to close it out for St. Lawrence.
The Saints took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, as Regan led off the game with a double to right center, advanced to third on a while pitch and scored on a two-out RBI single to left by LeFevre.
In the fourth inning, Robson was issued a lead-off walk and stole second before moving to third on a single down the left field line by fellow junior
Adam Reichel.
Anthony Butler picked up his first RBI of the day on a ball hit to short, that allowed Robson to come home for the Saints second run.
Plattsburgh answered with two runs on two hits and an error in the bottom half of the frame to tie the game at 2-2, but that would be all the Cardinals would get against Grady and the Saints.
St. Lawrence came back with another run in the top of the fifth – the eventual game-winning run – for a 3-2 lead, when Digilio scored on an RBI single to right by senior
Kyle MacDonald.
In the seventh inning, the Scarlet and Brown pushed across nine runs on seven hits and one error to put the game out of reach.
Digilio led off with a single to left and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt with
Isaac Lewis at the plate. Lewis walked and LeFevre followed with an RBI single through the left side that plated Digilio for a 4-2 St. Lawrence lead.
MacDonald singled to third to load the bases and
Devin Robson was hit by a pitch in the next at bat to bring in the Saints fifth run.
After a pitching change for the Cardinals, Reichel hit an RBI single to shortstop before Butler tripled to center field to clear the bases and push the lead to 9-2.
A walk to Regan led to another change on the mound for Plattsburgh and put runners on the corners for Digilio. The first-year infielder singled to right center, driving in Butler, and Lewis followed with a fielder's choice on a ground ball to second that scored Regan for an 11-2 lead.
The team's final run of the afternoon came from an RBI double from LeFevre - who had two hits and two RBI in the Saints marathon inning – to score Lewis for the eventual 12-2 margin.
In addition to LeFevre's 5-for-5 performance, Digilio (2-for-4), MacDonald (2-for-5) and Reichel (3-for-5) all had multi-hit games for the Saints.
St. Lawrence, now 7-13 overall, will travel to Skidmore this Saturday and Sunday for a four-game Liberty League series with the Thoroughbreds.Â
