Despite three home runs by
Beau Yaremko,
Mic Regan and
Michael LeFevre in a five-run fourth inning for St. Lawrence, the Saints fell 13-9 to SUNY Canton on Thursday afternoon in their home opener on Tom Fay Field.
The back-to-back home runs for Yaremko and Regan were the first of their careers, as they, as well as LeFevre, helped St. Lawrence take a 5-2 lead through four, but the Roos responded with nine runs over the next three innings to take the win.
The first five hitters in the order for St. Lawrence combined for 10 hits, while Yaremko paced the Saints offence with a 4-for-5 day with three RBI and four runs scored. LeFevre also had three RBI in the loss.
After Canton built a 2-0 lead with a run each in the first and third inning, the Saints cranked three shots over the fence, with Yaremko taking his two-run bomb to left, Regan driving a solo homer to straight away center and LeFevre's finding the grass beyond the first in right center for two more runs to conclude the scoring in the inning.
In the top of the fifth, Canton scored four runs on four hits and one error to take a 6-5 lead, but St. Lawrence responded to tie it up in the bottom of the frame when Yaremko scored on an RBI single by
Taylor Digilio into the hole at second.
However, it was all Canton from then on out. The Roos scored three runs on three hits - all for extra bases including a home run – in the sixth, and added two more on a pair of RBI doubles in the seventh to push the lead to 11-6.
In the bottom half of the seventh, Yaremko doubled to center to plate first-year
Anthony Butler before Digilio singled to left to bring Yaremko home to score the Saints eighth run. He would also score the final run of the day for the Scarlet and Brown in the bottom of the ninth.
The Saints used six pitchers on Thursday afternoon, with first-year
Evan Reichel taking the loss. He allowed three runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Jake Farrell was the starter and pitched two innings, as did
Will Fellows; both allowed a run on three hits.
Matt Phelan,
Robert Iametti and
Charlie Pacilio also made appearances against SUNY Canton.
St. Lawrence will head back out on the road for a four-game Liberty Leagues series at Skidmore on Saturday and Sunday.Â
