Extra-Base Hits Power 'Jackets Past Saints

St. Lawrence baseball dropped a pair of Liberty League games to Rochester on Friday afternoon, as the Yellowjacket bats erupted for 25 combined runs in 11-1 and 14-7 wins in Rochester.

Senior Kyle MacDonald led the Saints with three hits and three RBIs on the day; driving in the Saints lone run in the opening game of the four-game set with a single up the middle in the sixth inning to drive in sophomore Michael LeFevre.

Rochester scored at least one run in each of their last five at bats in the first game with 11 runs on 12 hits, including multi-hit games from Dan Warren and Steve Eychner.

The Saints had five hits in game one; one a piece for Mic Regan, Adam Reichel, LeFevre, MacDonald and Taylor Digilio.

Senior Dan Hedden was the pitcher of record for St. Lawrence, allowing four runs on six hits in three and two-thirds, while tying his season high with six strikeouts. Matt Phelan (1.1), Alex Black (0.1) and Robert Iametti (0.2) each made appearances in relief.

For Rochester, Evan Janifer went the distance with a complete game victory in game one, matching Hedden's six strikeouts and allowing one run on five hits with four walks.

In game two, the Saints trailed 14-0 through seven innings as the Yellowjackets registered seven extra-bases hits, including three home runs – two of which came back-to-back in the second inning - to build the lead.

In the eighth, St. Lawrence scored four runs on four hits to chip away at the deficit with the help of three extra-base hits of its own.

Mic Regan led off the inning with a single to right center and came around to score on a one-out triple by LeFevre. An RBI groudout by MacDonald brought in another run and Taylor Digilio's double to center field plated both Anthony Butler and Devin Robson to make it 14-4.

After Rochester was retired in order in the bottom of the frame, the Saints put together a two-out rally to tack on three more runs, but couldn't completely erase the early deficit.

With two men on, MacDonald singled to left and advanced to third on a fielding error by the Yellowjackets to drive in both Adam Reichel and LeFevre to cut the lead to 14-6.  He then scored on a wild pitch for the Saints final run of the afternoon.

Each squad used three members of its pitching staff in game two, with starter Sam Downes taking the loss for the Saints with 10 runs and nine hits allowed in four innings with four walks and three strikeouts. Will Fellows and Charlie Pacilio pitched in relief.

Yellowjackets starter Jack Denzer pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just five hits with four strikeouts. The Saints scored four of their runs off reliever Luke Meyerson and the other three off Tyler McConway.

St. Lawrence is now 3-10 overall and 2-4 in the Liberty League, while Rochester improves to 9-7 and 4-2. The team's will square off in another conference doubleheader on Saturday with game times scheduled for 12:00 and 2:30 p.m.
