With the bases loaded and two outs, junior
Devin Robson scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning to help the Saints to a wild 8-7 walk-off win against the University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon. The team's split their Liberty League doubleheader, with the Yellowjackets taking game one 6-2.
The Saints scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning in game two to fully erase an early the deficit and tie the game at 7-7 heading into the ninth.
After Rochester retired to first two batters in the inning
Tyler Guido was hit by a pitch and
Mic Regan singled through the right side to put runners on the corners for
Beau Yaremko, who finished tied with a team-high two RBI in the game.
Yaremko put an 0-2 pitch into right field to plate Guido and move Regan to second before
Isaac Lewis doubled down the left field to drive in two more runs and cut the deficit to one at 7-6.
The Yellowjackets made a pitching change following Lewis's at bat, but a fielding error by the shortstop on a ball hit by
Michael LeFevre allowed the inning to contine, setting up the game-tying RBI single by
Adam Reichel. Setting up the potential for a walk-off in the ninth with the Saints playing as the home team in both of Saturday's contests.
Rochester left two men on in the top of the ninth against closer
Liam Rogers, who picked up the win for the Saints. He and senior
Jake Farrell combined for three scoreless innings in relief, as Rogers didn't allow a hit in the ninth and Farrell pitched two and a third innings, allowing just three hits and recording one strikeout.
Starter
Emmett Dunn threw five and two-thirds for St. Lawrence, giving up seven runs on six hits and also struck out six; a new career high.
The Saints manufactured Robson's winning run without recording a hit, as the junior walked to lead off the inning and Guido and Regan were both hit by pitches to load the bases. With two outs and
Isaac Lewis at the plate, Rochester pitcher Grant Petito threw the wild pitch that allowed Robson to take home and give the Saints the win.
Five Saints finished multi-hit games, with Lewis leading the way with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Lewis was also the only Saint with multiple hits in the first game, which Rochester won 6-2 en route to taking three-of-four from St. Lawrence on the weekend.
The 'Jackets built a 5-0 lead through five and a half before the Saints answered with a pair in the bottom of the sixth.
Tom Sullivan started the rally for St. Lawrence with a single through the right side and advanced to second when
Taylor Digilio reached first on a wild pitch following a strikeout. With two men on, Lewis doubled down the left field line to plate both runs for the Saints.
John Ghyzel earned the complete-game win for Rochester, allowing just four hits and two runs with eight strikeouts. For the Saints, senior
Frank Grady took the loss as the starter; he went three and a third and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits with a strikeout.
Both
Evan Reichel and
Robert Gates made appearances in relief in game one.
The Saints, now 4-11 overall and 3-5 in conference games, will play host to Bard for a four-game Liberty League set this weekend on Saturday and Sunday in their home openers for the 2016 season.
