Kiera Taussig Leads Dominating Win over SUNY Potsdam

Kiera Taussig scored six times including four consecutive goals in the second half in a span of just 2:34 to lead the St. Lawrence University Women's Lacrosse team to an 18-9 win over SUNY Potsdam Tuesday evening on North Country Field at Hall-Leet Stadium in Canton.

Taussig scored the first goal of the game before Caroline Bailey and Kara Hurley added goals as the Saints (4-4) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the contest.

Potsdam (3-3) scored to stop the early run but St. Lawrence answered with six of the next seven goals to take a 9-2 lead into the halftime break.

Abigail Owens and Julia Mitiguy scored to start the run before Kayla Schmalz added two goals, Ashley Norris scored and Taussig notched her third of the game.

In the second half, Potsdam came out strong with three straight goals including one off the opening draw just nine seconds into the period. The Bears trimmed the lead to 9-5 with 27:34 left in the half.

That's when Taussig took over scoring the next four consecutive goals in less than three minutes to regain the momentum for the Saints. Hayden Stein assisted on two of the goals with Mitiguy adding an assist and the fourth coming after Taussig dodged a pair of defenders and scored into the upper corner of the goal.

Potsdam rallied back with four straight goals over the next 10 minutes to cut the lead to 13-9 with 11:46 left to play but did not score again the rest of the game.

Owens scored 20 seconds later to spark a five-goal run to end the game. Chloe Knapp, Allie Cornell-Roberts, Emily Johnson and Bailey rounded out the scoring for the Saints. It was the first career goal for Johnson.

Taussig led all scorers with six points while Stein added four points on four assists and Schmalz chipped in four points on two goals and two assists.

Olga Lukas picked up her second win of the season making three saves in the first 48 minutes of action while Cricket Wemyss played the final 12 minutes in the St. Lawrence goal.

The Saints enjoy two more home games over the weekend playing the University of Rochester at 4 pm Friday and facing RIT at 3 pm Saturday in a pair of Liberty League games.
