Scudder and Waterson Lead Women’s Basketball Past RPI

Jenny Scudder and Cara Waterson scored 18 points each to lead the St. Lawrence University Women's Basketball team to a 79-70 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Saturday in a Liberty League contest at Burkman Gymnasium in Canton.

RPI (5-15 overall, 1-10 Liberty League) jumped out to an early lead scoring 10 of the first 12 points of the game. Waterson scored a layup to stop the run and triggered a St. Lawrence (15-6, 8-4) rally as the Saints came back and took a one-point lead late in the first quarter on a jumper from Sarah Thomas.

The teams ended to first quarter tied at 15-15.

The game remained close for the first several minutes of the second quarter but with the score tied at 21-21, the Saints scored the next 11 consecutive points to pull ahead 32-23 and a late 3-pointer by Scudder gave the Saints a 10-point lead at 35-25 heading into the halftime intermission.

The Saints stayed hot in the second half scoring the first five points of the third quarter and ran up a 17-point lead at 48-31 with a Lauren Quattrocchi layup near the midpoint of the period.

RPI rallied late in the quarter to trim the lead to seven points by the end of the third quarter at 48-41.

St. Lawrence scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to regain the double-digit lead and the Saints maintained the lead with strong foul shooting in the final five minutes of the game.

Besides Waterson and Scudder scoring 18 each, Quattrocchi added 10 points and seven assists as the lone senior honored on Senior Day for eh Saints. Kaelyn Kohlasch added nine points and Caroline Dalton had eight points and was tied with Scudder for the team lead with nine rebounds.
