Junior Kyle Edwards had the best game of his career with 27 points on 10-of-14 shooting including 7-of-10 3-pointers to lead the St. Lawrence University Men's Basketball team to an 81-62 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Saturday afternoon in a Liberty League contest at Burkman Gymnasium in Canton.
St. Lawrence (12-8 overall, 8-4 Liberty League) remained in first place in the Liberty League standings a full game ahead of three teams tied for second with Skidmore, RIT and Union all tied with 7-5 records.
The Saints jumped out to an early lead and had a double-digit advantage just five minutes into the contest as Edwards connected on a pair of 3-pointers followed by a Riley Naclerio 3-pointer as St. Lawrence had an early 11-1 lead.
After RPI (10-10, 4-7) trimmed the lead back to five, the Saints exploded for a 13-0 run that was started by an Edwards 3-pointer and capped by one of his layups as St. Lawrence jumped to a 20-point lead at 26-6 with just nine minutes gone in the first half.
The teams went into the halftime intermission with St. Lawrence holding a 17-point lead at 39-22.
The Saint continued to build on the lead in the second half with small runs and held a 30-point lead with 6:49 left to play as Edwards drained another 3-pointer before Naclerio and Kyle Kobis added layups for a 74-44 St. Lawrence advantage.
After starters were removed from the game, RPI trimmed back the lead and cut the advantage to 19 points over the final five minutes of the contest.
Edwards was the lone player scoring in double digits for St. Lawrence while
Willie Zachery,
Chris Miner and
Kieran Miller each scored nine. Kobis led the team with seven rebounds and
Kaleb Faison scored three points and grabbed three rebounds after being honored in a pre-game senior day ceremony.
