Saints, Brown Skate To 2-2 Draw

Drew Smolcynski scored his seventh of the year at Brown Saturday
Box Score Feb. 20: Gavin Bayreuther scored his tenth goal of the year with a shot to the upper corner with 4:05 to play in the second period, tying the game at 2-2 and it stayed there through a hectic third period and overtime as St. Lawrence and Brown skated to a tie at Meehan Auditorium Saturday night.

With a Dartmouth loss to Cornell on Saturday, the Saints maintained their hold on fourth place in the ECAC standings, but are now just a point ahead of Dartmouth and RPI. The Saints and Dartmouth play next Friday night.

Brown, which finished its final home weekend with a win and a tie against the North Country teams turned in a strong third period, outshooting the Saints 15-5, but Saint goalie Kyle Hayton came with with some big saves and stopped everything Brown sent his way. Brown goalie Tim Ernst was equally effective and made some big stops in the first and second periods to keep Brown in contention as the Saints created a number of good scoring chances.

SLU jumped out to an early lead as Drew Smolcynski scored his seventh of the year off a faceoff win in the Brown end with Jacob Pritchard and Brian Ward assisting at 6:33 of the first, but the lead lasted only 45 seconds as Brown freshman Alex Brink took advantage of a bounce off a skate as the puck came right to him in the left faceoff circle and he went upper corner for his fifth of the year at 7:18.

Brown took a 2-1 lead at 14:07 of the second period as Nick Lappin took a shot which deflected off a stick in front and in, but Bayreuther then scored the equalizer. He took a pass from Ryan Lough and headed into the Brown zone, while his first shot was kicked out, the rebound came right back to him and he snapped a shot under the crossbar for his 10th of the year at 15:55.

The Saints had to kill off a late second period power play and another in the third to keep the tie, and Hayton had the only two saves in overtime for the Saints fourth tie of the year overall and third in league play.
