The St. Lawrence University Women's Basketball team played one of its best quarters of the season in a fourth quarter comeback attempt but the early deficit was too much to overcome as the Saints fell 68-59 to William Smith in a Liberty League game Saturday afternoon in Geneva.
The Saints (15-8 overall, 8-6 Liberty League) suffered one of their worst opening quarters of the season, scoring just two points and falling behind 17-2 after the first 10 minutes of action. Ellie Gonyeau was the only Saint to score in the first quarter and that basket came with just 1:17 left in the period.
In the second and third quarters, the team played to even scores with each team scoring 13 points in the second quarter and each adding 18 points in the third.
William Smith (10-12, 8-6) held the 15-point lead at the start of the final quarter but had as much as a 23-point lead midway through the third quarter.
Lauren Quattrocchi and Kaelyn Kohlasch sparked the comeback as a layup by Quattrocchi made it a five point deficit with 3:30 left and another layup with 29 seconds left cut the Heron lead down to four points.
Williams Smith was able to connect on 3-of-4 free throws in the closing seconds to seal the victory.
Quattrocchi finished with a career-high 17 points and also set the school record for assists in a season with her third assists of the day. She finished with a team-leading six assists. Kohlasch had 16 points including four 3-pointers and Jenny Scudder came off the bench to score 10 points for the Saints.
The loss moved the Saints into a tie for fourth place in the Liberty League standings with two games remaining. St. Lawrence will host Clarkson Wednesday night with a 6 pm start and finish the regular season at Skidmore with a 2 pm game Sunday.
