Jenny Scudder scored 12 points to spark a 15-0 St. Lawrence run to lead the women's basketball team to a 69-48 win over Rensselaer in a Liberty League game on Saturday afternoon in Troy.
With St. Lawrence (3-6 overall, 1-1 Liberty League) holding a 13-12 lead after one quarter of play, Scudder nailed three 3-pointers, a jumper and a free throw for the first 12 points of the period. Cara Waterson added a three-point play to cap the 15-0 run to give the Saints a 28-12 lead.
A 3-point basket by Meghan Hynes and a late basket by Sarah Thomas extended the SLU lead to 22 points as the Saints scored a season-best 26 points in the quarter and took a 39-17 lead into the halftime break.
"In the second quarter we fixed the phases of the game that have haunted us all season," said head coach Dan Roiger. "We took care of the basketball, took good shots and we dominated the boards. It was our best quarter of the season."
Rensselaer (5-6, 0-2) cut into the lead in the third quarter outscoring the Saints 19-10 in the period. The Saints led 49-36 to start the final quarter and Shayna Davner started the period with a layup and Annabella Pugliese hit a pair of baskets later in the period to solidify the St. Lawrence lead.
The Saints held Rensselaer below 30 percent shooting from the floor, including 3-for-16 from 3-point range, and outrebounded RPI 49-32.
Scudder led the Saints with 12 points while Hynes finished with 11; Davner and Waterson added 10 points each. Caroline Dalton and Waterson led the team with eight rebounds each. Pugliese added seven rebounds and Scudder grabbed six for the Saints.
St. Lawrence returns home Tuesday for a 6 p.m. matchup against Clarkson from Burkman Gymnasium.
