Kyle Edwards, Riley Naclerio and Willie Zachery each scored in double figures to lead the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team to a 75-63 victory over Union College in the Liberty League opener on Friday afternoon in Schenectady.
Edwards led St. Lawrence (7-1 overall, 1-0 Liberty League) with 16 points while Naclerio scored 15 and Zachery added 14 points for the Saints. The trio combined to hit 22 of the 30 free throws converted for St. Lawrence.
The Saints were patient on offense, working the ball inside the Union (4-5, 0-1) defense, drawing 28 personal fouls that resulted in 39 free throw attempts. Union attempted just over half as many free throws, with just 20 attempts from the line.
St. Lawrence led 34-27 at halftime, but saw the lead shrink to one point early in the second half, but Naclerio followed with a three-point play on the offensive end to regain control. The play sparked a 9-1 run for the Saints that opened up a 48-38 with 11:53 left to play.
A pair of free throws by Zachery and two more by Ben Crawford opened up the Saints largest lead of the game, 68-53.
After Union trimmed the lead to eight points at 69-61, Zachery and Edwards combined for six straight free throws to seal the victory.
The Saints were 30-for-39 from the line for the game while Union was limited to 12-for-20 from the charity stripe.
Kyle Kobis finished with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Edwards added eight rebounds and Zachery handed out a team-leading four assists.
The Saints continue Liberty League play Saturday at Rensselaer with a 2 p.m. game before returning home for the first home game of the new year with an 8 p.m. contest Tuesday against Clarkson.
