Kaleigh White's goal in the 83
rd minute proved to be the difference, as the St. Lawrence women's soccer team held on for a 4-3 win over Skidmore in Saturday's Liberty League match on Sandy MacAllaster Field. The win snaps a two-game slide for the Saints.
White finished with two goals for the Saints, while
Lindsay Geier and
Katie Stames also scored for the Scarlet and Brown in the high-scoring affair. All three goal-scorers also tallied an assist on the day, as did first-year
Emily Wade.
For the visiting Thoroughbreds, it was Jane Huber, Emily Mendes and Emily Saliterman that bested Saints' goalkeeper
Samantha Allen, as Skidmore continually chipped away at the St. Lawrence lead.
"We always expect a high level of intensity during conference play and this was no exception," head coach
Franco Bari said. "Skidmore came at us hard and we responded very well."
In the 15
th minute, Geier collected the ball at midfield and hit White with a through ball 20 yards from goal. She split the defense, moved into the box alone and bested goalkeeper Alyssa Rollins for a 1-0 St. Lawrence lead.
Skidmore pulled even at 1-1 in the 31
st minute with Huber's goal after she won possession from the Saints' defense on a short goal kick and fired a shot from 20 yards out into the middle of the net, with Allen diving towards the post.
But just before the half Geier regained the lead for St. Lawrence, converting a free kick from just outside the box in the 42
nd minute. Wade rolled the ball forward on the step over and Geier hit a low shot through traffic that snuck into the far lower 90 to make it 2-1 in favor of the Saints.
It was Stames who gave the Saints a little breathing room at 3-1 to start the second half, taking a pass from White in the middle of the field 25 yards from goal and dribbling through a trio of defenders before hitting a slow-rolling shot inside the near post.
Skidmore cut the deficit to one after the ball slipped through Allen's hands and off her legs on a save off a free kick, allowing Mendes to deposit the rebound, before White tallied her second of the game and fifth of the season for the eventual game winner.
Stames hit White on the run coming down the right wing and the Middleton, Mass., native moved in alone on Rollins once again, touching it around the goalkeeper for an easy finish inside the box.
Though Saliterman would once again pull the Thoroughbreds within one in the 88
th minute, time ran out on Skidmore's comeback attempt and the Saints hung on for the win to improve to 7-3-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Skidmore drops to 3-5-1 and 0-4-1 with the loss.
Skidmore outshot the Saints 20-16 overall and held a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal, but
Samantha Allen made six saves and the Saints' defense added a team save in the win. Rollins had three stops for Skidmore.
"This was a well-needed result for us and our hope is to now keep the momentum moving forward," Bari said.
The Saints will return to Sandy MacAllaster Field next weekend for a Liberty League double feature, hosting Union on Friday, Oct. 14 and 4 p.m. and Rensselaer the following day at 2 p.m.
