Second Half Surge Lifts Saints Past Profs

Seniors Christian Yarros and Dan Hunt and first-year players Tapshak Augustine and Iyayi Imade each scored in the second half of Saturday's opening game of the Lotto Classic Tournament to help St. Lawrence blank Rowan 4-0.

After an uncharacteristic first half for the Saints the teams entered halftime tied at 0-0, but it didn't take long for St. Lawrence to get back to its game plan in the second as it took possession early and kept the Profs pinned in their defensive third, earning three corner kicks in a span of three minutes. The third of which led to the Saints first goal of the day.

Junior Noah Bunton took the corner in the 51st minute and played the ball into the middle of the box. It skimmed the head of a Rowan defender before landing near the penalty kick line for Yarros who buried it high in the middle of the net for his first of the season and the eventual game winner.

Less than a minute earlier fellow senior Ryan Grant won a 50-50 ball with the Profs' keeper Kyle Dennis and had a look at a wide open net, but it was saved at the line by a Rowan defender, setting up Bunton's corner and the Yarros goal.

Augustine pushed the Saints lead to 2-0 with a low shot across the box that snuck under the outstretched arm of Dennis in the 72nd minute for the Abuja, Nigeria native's first collegiate goal. Sophomore Ryan Roche picked up his first of two assists with a near-perfect pass to Augustine to spring him in the box.

Just minutes later, Imade connected for his first collegiate goal after another feed from Roche. Roche carried along the right touchline and found Imade open at the right corner of the box for a blast that found its way past Dennis low on the right side to give St. Lawrence a 3-0 lead.

Hunt scored the Saints fourth goal and his second of the season in the 80th minute when he crashed the net following another team save by the Profs on a Ryan Grant shot. Despite making the save, the Rowan defender couldn't control the ball and put it right on Hunt's foot on the six.

St. Lawrence outshot the Profs 18-11 in the contest with a 12-5 edge in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Roethel made five saves en route to his second consecutive shutout this season. Dennis finished with six saves for Rowan. The Saints also finished with an 8-5 edge in corner kick opportunities.

The Scarlet and Brown will return to Sandy MacAllaster Field on Sunday morning for an 11:30 am match with Fredonia State in the final game of the Lotto Classic Tournament.
