For the third consecutive game the St. Lawrence men's soccer team and senior goalkeeper
Ryan Roethel did not concede a goal, as the Saints shutout Fredonia, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon to win the 2015 Lotto Classic Tournament on Sandy MacAllaster Field.
Seniors
Harry Copeland and
Ryan Grant and first-year
Tapshak Augustine each scored for the Saints in the win, while sophomore
Luis Jimenez picked up two assists.
In the 39
th minute senior
Dan Hunt earned a free kick for the Saints along the Fredonia endline after he was tripped up making a run at the net. The Saints pulled the back line forward for the set piece, which was taken by junior
Edward Gonzalez, as the Central Falls, R.I. native played the ball high to the far side of the box for the 6-foot-5 Copeland,
who headed it just under the crossbar for his first of the year and the first goal for the Saints in the first half of a match this season.
Copeland was tied for the team-lead in goals in 2014, most of which came on plays similar to that against Fredonia.
St. Lawrence carried a 1-0 lead into halftime and got back to work quickly in the second, with Grant pushing the lead to 2-0 in the 53
rd minute.
The play started with
Morgan Smith dribbling down the left side and beating four Fredonia defenders before dishing it off to Jimenez as he cut towards the middle of the box. Jimenez drew the defense and then touched a pass to Grant to his right. Grant redirected the ball behind goalkeeper Sammy Torrelli into the right lower 90 for his third goal in as many games; already surpassing his total for all of 2014 (2).
Jimenez set up the Saints third goal in the 70
th minute with a thru ball to Augustine in the middle of the box. Augustine bested Torrelli along the ground into the middle of the net for his second of the season and the Saints final goal of the weekend.
Roethel finished with two saves on the afternoon and the Saints finished with a 21-3 advantage in shots. Torrelli made three stops for the Blue Devils, while his replacement,
Austin Santor, recorded two saves in less than 13 minutes of action.
The Saints were the lone team to win both games this weekend, as Clarkson and Rowan both split their contests and Fredonia fell to both the Saints and Golden Knights.
St. Lawrence will return to Sandy MacAllaster field for a pair of nonconference games next weekend against St. John Fisher on Sept. 11 (4 pm) and SUNY Geneseo on Sept. 12 (2 pm). Â
