Kennedy Marchment and
Justine Reyes each had multi-goal games for St. Lawrence, but Kendall Coyne and the Northeastern (1-0-1) offense exploded for five goals in the first period en route to a 9-5 win over the Saints (0-1-1) at Appleton Arena on Sunday afternoon.
"Northeastern came in with a real good transition game that we had trouble slowing down today," Head Coach
Chris Wells said. "Coyne was close to unstoppable."
Coyne got the Huskies on the board just 4:12 seconds into the first period when she stuffed a shot under the pads of St. Lawrence starting netminder
Brooke Wolejko, but Saints' senior defenseman
Megan Armstrong pulled her team even four minutes later.
At the 8:27 mark of the opening frame Armstrong sent a hard slapshot through traffic that beat Brittany Brittany Bugalski for her first goal of the season.
Kirsten Padalis and
Abbey McRae assisted on the play for their first points of the 2015-16 season.
Northeastern then scored three straight, including a power play tally by Coyne for her second of the day to build a 4-1 lead before Reyes notched her first of the day and first of her collegiate career with less than two minutes remaining in the first.
Heather Mottau made it 5-2 in favor of the visitors with 54 seconds to play in the opening frame.
In the second period, Northeastern's Hayley Scamurra scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 7:40 mark with an assist going to Denisa Krizova for a 6-2 lead.
Marchment notched her third of the season after she took a feed from
Amanda Boulier and beat Bugalski over the left shoulder with a flat angle shot that went bar down to cut the deficit to three goals at 6-3.
Reyes added her second of the day just over two minutes later to make it 6-4 Huskies.
Hannah Miller picked up the puck along the wall in the neutral zone and played it forward to Reyes who carried it in over the Northeastern blue line, swung out wide and beat two defenders before snapping off a wrister into the top of the cage over Bugalski's shoulder on the blocker side.
Northeastern tacked on two more in a span of a minute and 23 second late in the middle frame to send the game to the third period with an 8-4 lead. The final goal of the second completed the hat trick for Kendall Coyne.
Kennedy Marchment again cut the deficit to three goals when she took a pass from
Kirsten Padalis on the far post and backhanded it home for her second of the day and fourth of the season at the 6:22 mark of the third.
But Scamurra added an empty net goal late in regulation to give the Huskies the eventual 9-5 margin.
Bugalski finished with 33 saves for Northeastern, while Wolejko and first-year goaltenders
Grace Harrison and Sonija Shelly combined for 21 saves for St. Lawrence.
"We did plenty of good things on the weekend that we will be able to move forward with," Wells added. "These games are perfect to play in at this time of year. We get to find out exactly where we are in relation to where we want to be."
The Saints will continue their non-conference slate with a home-and-home series against Route 11 Rival, Clarkson, next Friday and Saturday. The teams will open at Cheel Arena at 7 p.m. on Oct. 2 and turnaround for a 3 p.m. Saturday contest on Oct. 3 at Appleton Arena.Â
