No. 5 Clarkson used a goal in every period and an extra empty-net tally in the third to post a 4-0 win over St. Lawrence in the first game of a home-and-home series between the rivals.
"We were able to generate some nice chances and play at a good pace for parts of the game, especially in the first," Head Coach
Chris Wells said. "Clarkson capitalized on their first two goals and took over the game."
The Golden Knights scored midway through each of the three frames with goals coming from Olivia Howe, Loren Gabel and Cayley Mercer; the latter of which was an empty netter. Savannah Harmon scored the fourth and final goal with just under three minutes remaining in regulation when she redirected a pass from Howe at the far post behind first-year netminder
Sonjia Shelly.
Shelly finished with 32 saves in her first full game for St. Lawrence. Clarkson netminder Shea Tiley made 23 saves for Clarkson in the shutout, including 13 in the first period.
"To the way we want to play we need to score goals and tonight Shea Tiley was up to all of our shots," Wells added. "Clarkson is always so tough on the puck and made it difficult to get quality chances late."
The Saints are now 0-2-1 on the season while Clarkson improves to 1-0-0. The teams will face off again in a nonconference match on Saturday at Appleton Arena. Puck drop is slated for 3:00 p.m.
