Saints, Huskies Play to 2-2 Tie

Sophomore Kennedy Marchment scored a pair of goals, both on the power play, to help St. Lawrence to a 2-2 tie with Northeastern in the regular season opener on Saturday afternoon.

Marchment got the Saints on the board early in the first before Northeastern scored two straight to take a 2-1 lead. The Courtice, Ont. native's second goal of the day tied the game and would eventually force overtime.

"That was a playoff type game right out of the chute," Head Coach Chris Wells said.  "Both teams competed hard all night and the goalies were up to any late chances when the pressure was on. We love to play up and down and so does Northeastern. It was a fun game to watch."

Northeastern's Brittany Bugalski finished with 26 saves, while the trio of St. Lawrence goaltenders in Brooke Wolejko, Grace Harrison and Sonija Shelly combined for 33 tops. Wolejko made a team-high 14 saves in the first period.

Early in the first period, the Saints cashed in on their first power play opportunity when Brooke Webster intercepted a pass in the St. Lawrence defensive zone and played the puck off the wall to spring Marchment on a breakaway and give the Scarlet and Brown a 1-0 lead.

At the 13:16 mark of the first, the Huskies' Kendall Coyne pulled the visitor's even at 1-1 with assists going to Jordan Krause and Hayley Scamurra.

"Coyne is as exciting a player to watch as there is; she works hard and was a threat all night," Wells said.

Shelby Herrington gave Northeastern the lead midway through the second when she created a turnover at the St. Lawrence blue line and fired a shot bar down over Harrison's left shoulder.

But just over three minutes later, Marchment redirected a shot by senior Jenna Marks in front of the crease for her second power play tally of the day to tie the game at 2-2. Amanda Boulier also assisted on the play.

The Saints and Huskies will faceoff again on Sunday at Appleton Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for noon.
