SUNY Potsdam capitalized on a corner kick in the 19
th minute to take and early lead and stun the No. 8 St. Lawrence men's soccer team with a 1-0 shutout win over the Saints on Sandy MacAllaster Field on Tuesday afternoon. It is the first win for Potsdam over St. Lawrence since 2005.
The loss is the first of the Saints this season, as they fall to 4-1-1 against nonconference opponents. Meanwhile, the Bears improve to 6-1 for 2015.
Potsdam's goal came on a Tom Benedetto corner kick that found Matthew Wagner at the far side of the box for a redirect behind Saints senior keeper
Ryan Roethel as he scrambled towards the post.
The Saints outshot the Bears 17-6 on Tuesday, including nine shots to Potsdam's zero in the second half. The Bears played a prevent defense, oftentimes packing nine men into the box to clog passing lanes and keep the Saints from moving the ball as they normally would in the attacking third.
Roethel finished with one save, while Bears goalkeeper Jesse Kohler made three stops in addition to a team defensive save in the first half.
The Saints will travel to Cortland on Friday for their first road game since a season-opening shutout win at Oswego on Sept. 1. The match with the Red Dragons is scheduled for 4 p.m.
