Roethel, No. 8 Saints Tie Cortland 0-0

Senior goalkeeper Ryan Roethel made a huge diving stop on a penalty kick attempt in the 21st minute of  Friday's game at SUNY Cortland to keep the Red Dragons off the board, as the No. 8 Saints played to a 0-0 draw on the road.

Cortland keeper Joe Brandofino, finished with a career-high 11 saves, including five during the overtime periods, as the Saints finished with a 19-11 edge in total shots and an 11-4 edge in shots on goal. The Saints are now 4-1-2 on the season, while Cortland sits at 4-1-1.

Roethel was given a yellow card after he came hard off his line and collided with a Cortland forward, resulting in a penalty for Red Dragon junior Daniel Friend at the 20:30 mark of the first half. But Roethel, who was used primarily in penalty kick situations before earning the starting spot as a senior, made a diving save to his left to deny Friend. He also thwarted three breakaway attempts in the contest.

Though neither team produced serious scoring chances in the second half, the Saints had all the opportunities in the overtime periods but Brandofino stopped junior Noah Bunton, sophomore Ryan Roche and first-year Tapshak Augustine with the game on the line to maintain the tie.

The Saints will look for their fifth win of the season on Saturday afternoon with a 3 p.m. contest against Buffalo State on Sandy MacAllaster Field.
