Saints, Knights Battle to 1-1 Draw

First-year midfielder Jethro Dede scored his first collegiate goal in the 74th minute to help the Saints (4-0-1) to a 1-1 draw with SUNY Geneseo (3-0-2) on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Canton.

For the first time this season, the Saints found themselves playing from behind as Geneseo ended their shutout streak at 380:18, with the go-ahead goal in the 21st minute off a set piece.

Jaisen Clark played the ball into the box for the Knights and Kevin McGrath volleyed it on goal, but his shot hit the base of the left post and popped back out to the six for Brad Campion who redirected it home to give his team a 1-0 lead, which they would carry into half time.

Early in the 74th minute, the Knights earned back-to-back corner kicks, the second of which the Saints were able to clear, spring Morgan Smith on the counter attack down the right wing. Smith sent a long cross to Dede as he cut into the box at the left corner and the New York, N.Y. native chipped a shot over the head of Knights' goalkeeper Logan Calvey from just inside the box for the equalizer.

The Saints had the majority of offensive chances from then on out, finishing with a 21-14 edge in shots, but one of the visitors' eight shots in the second half nearly put them back in front. Sophomore Luis Jimenez chested the ball down at the line and cleared it out of the box after a Geneseo corner with just over eight minutes remaining in regulation.

Jimenez's clear sent first-year Brendan McNamee on a break down the left wing, but McNamee was hauled down resulting in a yellow card to the Knights' Nick Keneally. The ensuing free kick was sent just wide to keep things at 1-1.

St. Lawrence senior goalkeeper Ryan Roethel, who was aggressive in the box and came off his line on numerous occasions to challenge the Knights on 50-50 balls, finished with three saves in the contest. Logan Calvey made six stops for Geneseo.

The Saints will finish their five-game home stand with a midweek match against SUNY Potsdam on Sandy MacAllaster field on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m, before traveling to face SUNY Cortland on Friday afternoon.
