Ryan Grant scored two goals and classmate
Dan Hunt tallied the other to help the St. Lawrence men's soccer team open the 2015 season with a 3-0 shutout win over Oswego on Tuesday night. The win is the first for first-year Head Coach
Mike Toshack.
"The guys worked very hard today and fully deserved the win," Toshack said. "All of our players displayed fantastic fight and concentration over the 90 minutes and I am very proud of them."
The Saints put the pressure on Oswego early, maintained possession and held the Lakers without a shot until the 36
th minute, while tallying 13 of their own in the first half. Hunt was awarded a penalty kick in the eighth minute but put it wide just outside the left post, and the game was scoreless at the half.
"It is a credit to the character of the players to keep going after missing an early penalty kick and coming close on several chances," Toshack added. "Games like this you can't let you guard down because one mistake can change the game."
Hunt and the Saints capitalized on a defensive mistake by the Lakers on a set piece in the 51
st minute.
Ross Suitor sent a corner kick into the box for Hunt, who was able to get a head on it. The ball deflected off Oswego keeper Todd Lawson and into the back of the net for the Saints first goal and eventual game winner.
Grant pushed the lead to 2-0 just over six minutes later with first-year
Tapshak Augustine assisting on the play for his first collegiate point. Augustine carried the ball down the right side before hitting a cross to Grant at the top of the box. Grant settled, turned and sent a shot into the right upper 90 Âfor his first of the night.
His second goal came in the 90
th minute when he took a pass from junior
Noah Bunton at midfield and dribbled into the attacking third before unleashing a rising shot from 30 yards out that found its way just under the crossbar to give the Saints the final three-goal margin.
The Saints finished with a 25-7 edge in shots and took 15 corners to Oswego's one. Senior goalkeeper
Ryan Roethel made three saves for his first collegiate shutout.
St. Lawrence will play host to Rowan University and Fredonia State on Saturday and Sunday at 12 p.m. and 11:30 a.m., respectively, and open the home portion of its schedule as part of the Lotto Classic Tournament on Sandy MacAllaster field.Â
