Schreyack Goes the Distance; Saints, Knights Split

May 2: Senior Andrew Schreyack allowed just six hits in a complete-game, 11-inning victory over Clarkson as the Saints erased a three-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning before earning a 4-3 win on a Devin Robson sac fly. They nearly did it again in game two but the Golden Knights early five-run lead proved to be too much, as Clarkson took the win 5-4 to earn the split in the final home games of the season for St. Lawrence.

With the split, St. Lawrence is now 16-19 and 7-14 in the Liberty League. Meanwhile, Clarkson is 21-7 and 14-6 and clinched a solidified its spot in the Liberty League tournament this afternoon.

Senior Chris Fernandez and Robson led the Saints with 4-for-8 and 3-for-8 afternoons, respectively. Mic Regan drove in a combined three runs and Adam Reichel's home run to right field; his second of the year, sparked the Saints' four-run rally in the fourth inning of game two.

In game one, Clarkson opened up a 3-0 lead in the third inning, but managed just two more hits off of Schreyack in the contest. The Liverpool, N.Y. native walked in the Golden Knights' first run before Will Coleman hit a two-RBI single to right field.

In the bottom of the seventh inning after a pair of singles by Robson and first-year Michael LeFevre, and a pair of fielder's choices by Kyle MacDonald and Reichel, sophomore Kyle Liszewski stepped to the plate with two outs and runners on first and third. He hit a routine ground ball to second base, but Clarkson's Matt Jenack threw the ball well wide of his first baseman; allowing Lizsewski to not only reach safely, but advance to second and LeFevre to score.

Regan then ripped a two-RBI singled to right center field to tie the game at 3-3 and force extras.

Isaac Lewis led off the bottom of the 11th inning with a single to center field. He then stole second and advance to third on the throwing error by the Golden Knights' catcher; setting up Robson for the game-winning sacrifice fly to center field.

Schreyack, who improved to 4-2 on the season, finished with four strikeouts in the win. Andrew Smith was the pitcher of record for Clarkson as he pitched two and one-third innings in relief and allowed one hit, one run and struck out one.

In game two, Clarkson built a 4-0 lead through the first three innings off of starting pitcher Ben Jenkins, who allowed seven hits in two and two-third innings. He was relieved by Alex Dermody, who took the loss for St. Lawrence after giving up the eventual game-winning run in the fourth inning on a Dom Pirro double to right field increased the visitors lead to 5-0.

The Saints responded with four runs in the bottom half of the frame, starting with a lead off solo shot by Reichel. With runners on the corners, Regan reached on an error by the third baseman that brought LeFevre home to cut the deficit to 5-2.

An RBI double to the base of the wall in left field by Fernandez scored Liszewski and Regan later took home one a wild pitch to pull St. Lawrence within one at 5-4.

They had the game-tying run at third base in both the fifth and seventh innings, but couldn't convert to once again force extra innings.

Seniors Fernandez, Jenkins, Mark Syron and Schreyack were honored in a pregame ceremony on Tom Fay Field. Heading into tomorrow games, the group has compiled a 79-67-2 record and appeared in two Liberty League tournaments, including a trip to the championship game in 2012.

They will play their last games in the Scarlet and Brown tomorrow afternoon as the Saints travel to Potsdam to complete for the final two games of their four-game set with the Golden Knights.
