Men’s Lacrosse Falls in Overtime in Liberty League Semifinal

Conor Healey scored for the St. Lawrence University Men's Lacrosse team on a diving shot into the upper corner of the goal with 25 seconds left in the fourth quarter to tie the score at 11-11 but Union College scored 3:15 into the overtime period for the 12-11 victory Friday afternoon in a Liberty League Tournament semifinal game on North Country Field at Hall-Leet Stadium in Canton.

The win for Union (13-3) advanced them to the championship game Sunday in Rochester against RIT who posted a 17-4 victory over Clarkson in the other tournament semifinal game.

The loss to Union in Canton was the first since 1994 ending a 12-game win streak for the Saints (9-8) over Union at home.

Union scored first less than two minutes into the contest but St. Lawrence answered with four consecutive goals including two in man-up situations to take a 4-1 lead.

Charlie Jennings and Jeremy Vautour had back-to-back man-up goals in a span of 1:18 before Jon Fairbanks and Tommy Hovey added even strength goals to give the Saints a 4-1 lead.

Union trimmed the lead to a goal with a late score in the first quarter and the first goal of the second quarter. The teams traded goals for the rest of the first half as Andrew Jarrett and Jennings added goals for St. Lawrence as the Saints took a 6-4 lead into the halftime intermission.

The teams continued to trade goals with each scoring twice in the third quarter. Healey and Hovey scored for the Saints and St. Lawrence held the two-goal advantage into the final quarter.

Union scored its only man-up goal to start the final quarter and Wil Burchenal answered four minutes later for a 9-7 St. Lawrence lead.

Union rallied with a pair of goals in a span of 35 seconds to knot the score at 9-9.

Burchenal scored again at the 3:32 mark on a pass from Luke DiLisio as St. Lawrence took the 10-9 lead.

Less than a minute later, Union tied the score again and with 1:31 left in the fourth quarter added another goal for the late lead.

After winning the ensuing faceoff, Union turned the ball over and St. Lawrence moved up the field on the attack.  St. Lawrence fired a pair of shots wide of the goal and with 38 seconds left to play, the Saints called a time out to draw up the final shot.

Fairbanks took a shot that was wide of the goal but Healey picked up the loose ball and came from behind the goal, dove and fired a shot into the upper corner to tie the game and force the overtime period.

Healey, Hovey, Jennings and Burchenal all scored two goals each and Fairbanks had a goal and two assists for the Saints. Caleb Kane led the St. Lawrence defense with three groundballs and caused four turnovers.
