Late Comeback Propels Ithaca to Extra-Inning Win Over Saints

April 29: The Ithaca baseball team came all the way back from a 4-0 deficit to earn a 5-4 win over the Saints Wednesday night at Onondaga Community College. The Bombers scored four runs in the eighth inning and won the game on a throwing error in the bottom of the 11th. With the loss, the Saints are now 15-18 overall this season, while the Bombers improve to 15-13.

The Saints built a 4-0 lead as Devin Robson doubled to drive in Adam Reichel in both the second and fourth innings to make it 2-0 in favor of the visitors. Reichel led the Saints with a 3-for-5 night and two runs scored. Robson finished 2-for-4 with two RBI.

In the top of the fifth, the Saints pushed the lead to 3-0 with just one hit in the inning. Mark Syron reached on a fielder's choice and then stole second to put a runner in scoring position for Isaac Lewis, who singled up the middle to plate the senior captain.

In the top of the seventh, fellow senior captain Chris Fernandez scored on a throwing error by the Bombers' catcher to give the Saints their 4-0 lead.

Ithaca spoiled the Saints shutout bid in the bottom of the 8th inning when Stephen Yanchus doubled down the left field line to plate Trevor Thompson. Zach Cole followed with a single to right that brought Yanchus home to score to cut the St. Lawrence lead to 4-2.

Domenic Boresta tripled to right center and Matt Connolly singled to complete the Ithaca comeback and tie the game at 4-4.

Graduate student Ben Jenkins, who came on in relief of Liam Rogers in the eighth inning, worked out of a bases load jam in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings.

Jenkins was the pitcher of record, as he was on the mound in the 11th when the Bombers strung together three singles and capitalized on throwing error by Regan on a play to third base that brought Yanchus in for the winning run.

Frank Grady was stellar on the mound in the start as he allowed just three hits and no runs in five innings of work, while striking out two.

The Saints will conclude their 2015 season with a four-game series against Clarkson this weekend, as they'll host the Golden Knights for a pair on Saturday, May 2 at 12 p.m. before traveling to Potsdam on Sunday.
