April 19: Senior
Chris Fernandez had an RBI and a run scored in the St. Lawrence baseball team's 2-0 win in the first game of a Liberty League doubleheader at Union College on Sunday afternoon. Union overcame and early deficit to earn a 10-2 win in the day's second game and finished 3-1 on against the Saints on the weekend.
With the split, St. Lawrence is now 13-13 overall and 5-10 against Liberty League opponents. Meanwhile, Union improves to 16-9 overall and 10-6 in conference games.
Fernandez led off the first inning with a double to center field and came around to score on a single by fellow senior
Mark Syron to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. He then drove in
Adam Reichel with his second double of the game; this one down the right field line with two outs, for the team's second run.
Senior
Andrew Schreyack earned his third win of the season on the mound for St. Lawrence, allowing just five hits in the seven-inning shutout, while striking out five.
The Saints were limited to just one hit in the second game on Sunday; a single by Fernandez to lead off the bottom of the first inning. An error and walk put two more runners on in the first for St. Lawrence before Fernandez scored the first run on a wild pitch and
Mark Syron stole home on a double steal with
Michael LeFevre to make it 2-0 in favor of the visitors.
Union erased the deficit with two runs in the top of the second and took the lead after adding five runs in the next two innings. The Dutchmen, who recorded 16 hits in the
contest, added three insurance tallies in the eighth to push their lead to 10-2.
St. Lawrence pitcher
Jake Farrell took the loss, as he threw three and two-thirds innings and allowed 11 hits and seven runs (five earned).
Ben Jenkins,
Matt Phelan and
Will Fellows also pitched for the Saints. Union's Andy Labeck pitched eight innings of one-hit baseball and struck out four batters in the win.
The Saints will travel to Rome, N.Y. for a midweek non-conference matchup with Hamilton College at DeLutis Field on Tuesday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
