Baseball Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader with a Two-Out Rally

The St. Lawrence University Baseball team scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and Mark Syron added a home run for an insurance run in the sixth inning as the Saints won a 7-4 decision in the second game of a doubleheader against Plattsburgh Thursday afternoon in a non-conference tilt on Tom Fay Field in Canton.

Plattsburgh (12-17) won the opener 8-2 limiting the Saints (14-14) to four hits. Two of the St. Lawrence hits were doubles by Devin Robson and Beau Yaremko. The Cardinals broke open a scoreless tie with three runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth before the Saints rallied for two in the bottom of the seventh inning for the final score.

In the nightcap, St. Lawrence stumbled early with three errors in the first inning allowing Plattsburgh to take a 2-0 lead.

The Saints rallied to score three times in the bottom of the first to take a lead.

Mic Regan singled to start the inning, stole second and scored one batter later on a wild pitch. Syron followed that run with a one-out single and advanced to second on a Kyle MacDonald single. Both runners moved up a base with stolen bases and each scored on separate errors for the 3-2 lead.

Plattsburgh regained the lead in the top of the second inning with two more runs but St. Lawrence knotted the score in the bottom half of the inning. Chris Fernandez, Tom Sullivan and Regan hit consecutive singles to score Fernandez tying the score at 4-4.

The score remained tied until the fifth inning when St. Lawrence put together a key two-out rally.

After the first two batters were retired, MacDonald doubled to deep left field to start the rally. Kyle Liszewski was hit by pitch and Yaremko walked to load the bases. After a Plattsburgh pitching change, Isaac Lewis singled to score MacDonald and Liszewski for the 6-4 Saints lead.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Syron hit a towering home run to deep right field to make it a three-run lead.

With darkness coming on fast, the seventh inning was started and Plattsburgh rallied for three runs to tie the score before the umpires called the game due to darkness. By rule, the game reverts back to the last completed inning giving the Saints a 7-4 victory in the shortened game.

Regan, Syron, MacDonald and Sullivan each finished with two hits apiece. Syron and MacDonald each scored twice and Lewis had two runs batted in.

Frank Grady started for St. Lawrence and surrendered four runs (two earned) with three strikeouts, Alex Dermody came on for 1 2/3 solid innings of relief to earn the victory while Liam Rogers picked up the save working the final inning without allowing a hit.
