The St. Lawrence University Men's Lacrosse defense held SUNY Potsdam scoreless for a stretch of nearly 30 minutes Sunday afternoon as the Saints scored a 14-9 victory over the Bears on Weeks Field at Leckonby Stadium in Canton.
Potsdam (5-5) jumped out to an early lead with a 3-1 advantage in the first 6:34 of the contest and held a 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter but St. Lawrence (8-5) rallied to score the next eight consecutive goals to take a 10-4 lead late in the third quarter and cruised to the 14-9 victory.
"This was a collective team win today," said head coach Mike Mahoney. "I was please at the way we responded after being down early and played solid defense for a majority of the game."
Conor Healey and Charlie Jennings scored goals in the first quarter. In the second quarter five different players scored as St. Lawrence outscored Potsdam 5-0 to take a 7-4 lead into the halftime intermission.
Healey netted his second of the game to start the second quarter before Luke DiLisio, Jeremy Vautour, Charlie Duprey and Tommy Hovey each scored for the Saints.
Hovey added the first two goals of the second half and Jennings scored on a man-up situation to give St. Lawrence a commanding 10-4 lead.
Potsdam scored late in the third quarter to stop the St. Lawrence scoring run but the Saints rattled off three of the next four goals and led 13-6 with only 5:37 left in the game. Cam Mullins, Healey and Tim Kelley all scored during the run as the Saints put the game out of reach.
The Bears scored three of the final four goals as Jamie DeNicola scored for the Saints but it was not enough as the Saints cruised to the 14-9 win.
Hovey lead the way in scoring for the Saints with three goals and three assists while Healey added three goals and an assist and Jennings chipped in a pair of goals and an assist. For St. Lawrence, 11 of the 13 goals had assists as eight different players earned assists in the game.
Andrew Butturini made 12 saves to earn his fifth victory of the season.
Eric Soderquist had three goals while Matt Moran and Berkley Stone added two each for the Bears.
"This was a good team win," said Mahoney. "It gives us important momentum with key conference games coming up for the remainder of the regular season schedule."
