Middlebury Rallies To Top Saints 13-11

Mar. 10: Middlebury College scored the first five goals of the second half and went on to a 13-11 NCAA Division III men's lacrosse victory over St. Lawrence University in the Saints home opener at Hall-Leet Stadium Tuesday evening.

The Panthers, now 3-1, trailed the 2-2 Saints 8-6 at the half, but outscored SLU 4-0 in the third quarter to take a 10-8 lead on Nick Peterson's goal with 1:52 to go in the period. Nate Smith-Ide made it a 11-8 game 1:09 into the fourth quarter and while the Saints got it back to a one-goal game on Austin Nadeau's goal from Wil Burchenal to make it 11-10 with 6:45 to go, Jon Broome and Jack Rautiola answered for the Panthers to make it 13-10 with 2:58 to go.

Senior Tommy Hovey scored his third goal of the game with just four seconds left for the 13-11 final.

Middlebury jumped out to an early 3-1 lead, but Conor Healey and Hovey brought the Saints back and had SLU in front 5-3 after one period. The two teams each scored three second period goals, two of them by Jeremy Vautour for the Saints and two for Middlebury by Tim Giarrusso to give the Saints their 8-6 halftime advantage.

Panther goalie Will Ernst kept Middlebury in contention with 10 of his 16 saves in the first half as SLU had a 23-14 edge in shots in the first half. Nick Ford made 13 saves for the Saints.

Rautiola had three goals and an assist to lead the Middlebury offense while Giarrusso had two goals and an assist and Jack Cleary had a pair of goals. Healey led the Saints with three goals and two assists while Hovey had three goals and Vautour and Duprey two each.

The Saints will return to action with games against Western New England and Springfield in Florida on March 16 and 18 while Middlebury hosts Wesleyan on Saturday.
