Feb. 27: Senior attackman
Tommy Hovey scored six goals and assisted on a seventh to lead St. Lawrence University's men's lacrosse team to a 19-10 win over Castleton in the season opener for both teams at the Adirondak Sports Center in Queensbury on Friday afternoon.
The Saints jumped out to an early lead against the Spartans, coached by former Saint player and graduate assistant coach Bo McDougall, leading 4-1 after one period at 10-3 at the half.
Castleton closed to within three goals 6-3 with 8:22 to go in the first half, but the Saints opened it up against with four unanswered before the intermission. Jeremy Vatour and Hovey then scored in the first 1:11 of period three to give the Saints a 12-3 lead. The Spartans battled back to within 13-6 on a man-up goal by Nikolas Rancourt with 2:14 left in the third, but the Saints pulled away again and led 18-6 when
Charlie Jennings scored from Jon Fairbanks with 11:06 left in the game.
SLU had a 58-33 overall edge in shots and a 43-33 advantage in ground balls. The Sainst made only eight turnovers for the game and caused 12 of Castleton's 22 turnovers. The Saints were 17 of 20 on clears and won 14 faceoffs to Castleton's 18.
Vatour backed Hovey's six goal afternoon with three goals while
Conor Healey had two goals and three assists.
Luke DiLisio, Jennings, Macky Lynch,
Robby Dowers,
Cal Hynson,
Charlie Duprey and
Jordan Dow had single goals for the Saints. Zach Davidson led Castleton with three goals.
Nick Ford and Andrew Butterini shared the goaltending duties for the Saints.
SLU is scheduled to return to action at Utica on March 4.
