Gonzalez Nets OT Game Winner for Saints at Bard

Senior Edward Gonzalez scored his first goal of the season in the 105th minute to give No. 16 St. Lawrence a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Bard on Saturday afternoon.

After Bard failed to clear a St. Lawrence corner kick midway through the second overtime session, the Saints played the ball back in deep to Chandler Short along the endline on the right side. Short's initial cross was blocked, but he regained possession and chipped the ball into Gonzalez who was on the corner of the six-yard box. He settled and lifted a shot straight into the top of the net over Bard goalkeeper Taylor Bond for the win.

Early in the second half it was first-year Jethro Dede who helped the Scarlet and Brown force overtime after Bard took a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute. Just over eight minutes later the New York, N.Y. native beat Bond with a shot from the middle of the box for the equalizer and his second goal of the season.

Dede beat Bond in another instance on the afternoon with a low shot inside the far post, but was ruled offside. The Saints had two other goals called back on offside calls Saturday as well.

St. Lawrence finished with a 17-8 edge in total shots and a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. Additionally, they earned an overwhelming 16 corner kick opportunities to the Raptors' three, including nine in the first half.

Bond and Saints senior goalkeeper Ryan Roethel both finished with four saves on the afternoon.

With the win, St. Lawrence improves to 8-2-2 overall and 2-1-0 in the Liberty League, while Bard dropped to 5-5-1 and 0-3-0 in the conference.

The Saints will travel to Hobart to continue their Liberty League schedule next weekend with a 3:00 p.m. match on Saturday, Oct. 10.
