Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Miami Edges Saints in a Thriller

Friday's game between 15th-ranked Miami (Ohio) and 17th ranked St. Lawrence at Appleton Arena was a great college hockey game, but the Saints came away frustrated after a disputed second period goal gave the RedHawks a 1-0 win.

Miami freshman center Jack Roslovic scored his fourth goal of the season on a power play 4:52 into the second period and senior goaltender Ryan McKay made it stand-up for a 1-0 win over the Saints. Both the power play and the goal itself were disputed by the Saints. The penalty call was a slashing call on a play on which a Saint shot broke a Miami player's stick and the goal came as the Saints argued that a Miami player interfered with Saint goalie Kyle Hayton.

The RedHawks, now 3-1-1 with three straight wins to their credit, handed the Saints, 3-2-0, their first home loss of the season in a game which took under two hours to complete despite 15 penalties and 14 power play chances for the two teams.

"It was too bad that there were two really good teams playing and the referees had to be too much of a difference maker," said Saint coach Greg Carvel. "It was two teams that played hard with great compete on both sides.

"If we want to score, we have to get to the net, get a little bit uglier and try to score some greasy goals," Carvel said.

The first period was end to end with both McKay and Saint sophomore Kyle Hayton turning aside some quality scoring bids. Roslovic scored the lone goal of the game on a power play at 4:52 as he gathered a puck in front and snapped it through traffic as Hayton was tangled with players in the crease.

The Saints battled back in the third period, outshooting Miami 14-5 with the help of five power play chances, but couldn't come up with the equalizer. SLU pulled Hayton for the final 1:10 of regulation, but the RedHawks turned back the extra attacker bid.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday.
