Seniors Help Saints Drop Bard, 89-65

Grant Tracy, Janpeter Brase, Payton Stahler and Al Jones went out winners on Saturday as the Saints topped Bard 89-65.
Box Score Feb. 22: The St. Lawrence University men's basketball team's class of 2014 went out in style on Saturday, as the quartet of Janpeter Brase, Al Jones, Payton Stahler and Grant Tracy combined for 44 points to lead the Saints to a sound 89-65 win over Bard College on "Senior Day" in the Burkman Gymnasium.

Though the regular season finale was a one-possession game at intermission, the Saints outscored Bard 51-30 in the second half to end the campaign with a victory.  St. Lawrence (10-15, 6-10) shot 53% from the floor in the second half, while the Raptors (5-20, 0-16) managed only 26% from the floor in the period.

Five Saints finished in double-figures, including Brase with 15 points and nine rebounds.  Jones also had 14 along with Brady Condlin, while rookies Kyle Kobis and Kyle Edwards had 18 and 11 points each, respectively.  Tracy added six points and two assists, while Stahler managed nine points and five rebounds.

Playing in his final collegiate game, Bard's Lamar Powell scored a game-high 20 points including seven in the final 1:30 of regulation to reach the 1,000 career point mark.  He was greeted with a standing ovation from both his teammates and the fans in attendance when he reached the number with a free throw with :35 seconds remaining.

The largest lead of the first half came in the final minute, when Brase converted an and-1 to put the home team up 38-33 with :48 seconds left in a highly-contested period.  However, Siondueh Burnette knocked down a jumper in the final seconds, cutting Bard's deficit to three, 38-35, at intermission.

With the game still close at 46-42 early in the second half, the Saints ripped off a 13-0 run and never looked back en route to the convincing win.  Kobis drilled a three, and after Condlin converted an and-1, Edwards was fouled behind the arc and made all three free throws.  Bard would finally end the run with 11:19 left, but the damage had been done, as the lead never got closer than 14.  The Raptors worked throughout the final minutes to give Powell as many scoring chances as possible and he was able to convert in the final seconds.

Burnette finished with 12 points and six boards for Bard, while Alex Fabean-Scotch hit 4-of-7 threes en route to 14 points for the visitors.  The Saints closed with a 37-31 edge in rebounds, as Jones and Kobis each had 10 points in the second half to help put the game away and finish the 2013-14 season with a victory.
