Nov. 1: A pair of first-half goals by junior
Samantha Rock and first-year
Katie Stames helped the St. Lawrence women's soccer team earn the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Liberty League tournament with a 2-0 win over Clarkson in the regular-season finale in Potsdam.
As the third seed, the Saints will travel to second-seeded RPI on Wednesday, Nov. 5 for a Liberty League semifinal matchup.
"Today's result was monumental for this team," Head Coach
Franco Bari. "Clarkson was a very tough opponent and while we felt a little pressure knowing we had a lot on the line, the team responded in a very positive way. The collective defending was tremendous and the goals were well earned. I'm very proud of our team."
It was a fairly evenly matched contest, with the shots even at seven per team, but the Saints managed to break down Clarkson goalkeeper Kim Kenline, while
Kelsey West was stellar in goal for the Scarlet and Brown; finishing with five saves, including four in the second half to grab her eighth shutout of the season. Â
Rock got the Saints on the board in the 23
rd minute with the game-winner off a feed from senior
Mackenzie Collins. The goal is Rock's third of the season, all of which have come in the later stages of conference play.
Stames extended the lead to 2-0 ten minutes later after she rang a shot off the post and in behind Kenline for her fourth goal of the year.Â
Hannah Merriam assisted on the play for her team-leading seventh helper; she has recorded an assist on all of Stames' goals so far this season.
St. Lawrence finishes the regular season with a 12-5-1 record overall and a 4-3-1 mark against conference opponents. Clarkson concludes their 2014 campaign at 6-10-1 and 2-5-1.Â
