Oct. 25:Freshman goaltender
Kyle Hayton had the busiest night for a St. Lawrence University netminder since the epic 3-2 four-overtime win against Boston University in the NCAA tournament in 2000, making 51 saves, but the Saints had to settle for a split of their series at tenth ranked Miami as the Redhawks pulled out a 2-1 win in overtime Saturday night.
It was the second straight weekend that the Saints had a win and an overtime loss against a top ten team, but the first time they have lost on Saturday as Sean Kurady snapped a 1-1 deadlock 3:25 into the extra period to give Miami the split.
"We looked like a tired team,"Â coach
Greg Carvel told the media. "That's a real good hockey team and we just couldn't bring the energy to match them tonight. But I give my guys a ton of credit. Nobody thought we could come down here and steal a win, and almost find a way to get two. Miami was the better team tonight, though."
The Redhawks come out of the weekend 4-2 on the season while the Saints are 3-3 heading into a non-league home-and-home set against arch-rival Clarkson next weekend.
Hayton's save total was the most since Derek Gustafson made 72 in that four overtime 3-2 win over Boston University and is the most for a Saint goaltender in regulation time in recent history. He had 38 saves in Friday's 5-4 win and finished with 89 stops for the weekend.
The Saints jumped out to the early lead for the second night in a row as senior
Justin Bruckel scored his second goal of the series at 15:07 of the first period as he picked up a rebound of a
Brian Ward shot which banged off the post and put it back in.
Gunnar Hughes also assisted on the goal as the Saints led after one for the second straight night.
While SLU was able to expand its lead in the second period on Friday, the Saints were not credited with a shot on goal in the second period in Saturday's game and Miami was able to tie it up when John Doherty scored his first of the year from Taylor Richart 6:48 into the second after a Saint turnover in their defensive end.
Hayton kept the Saints in the thick of it with his second straight 14-save period as Miami had a 29-4 edge in shots on goal through two periods.
Hayton and Miami goalie Jay Williams kept it a 1-1 game through the third period with Hayton making 16 saves and Williams six, but the Saints had several opportunities go just wide in a period which was more even than the statistics might indicate.
Miami came out strong to start the overtime and Hayton had seven saves before the puck popped free in front and Kurady was able to bury it for the game winner.
Williams finished with 10 saves for Miami which was credited with a 53-11 edge in shots on goal. The Redhawks were scoreless in five power play chances, while the Saints came up empty in four tries.
